Aquired a brown female puppy 4 months now, Ta'iga, a dear and very
obediant, after that I rescued a +- 7 month old "wolf" named Snow,
which looked like a Mal to me, he is quite impossible, but lovely!!!

Hi Mariana,

Welcome to the Malamute forum.

As a matter of interest from whom did you obtain your brown female
Alaskan Malamute puppy of 4 months.

Should Snow be a wolf hybrid, be careful; as from the age of about 4
year the wolf brain and character kicks in and they can become a
problem and a danger to young children and small animals.

If Snow is a male, I assume you will have him neutered.

For interesting reading on wolf hybrids, read:

Hi Johan. I bought Ta'iga from Shane (Kirsten, I think, will look it up
tomorrow) in Somerset West. I am just very concerned about Snow after
reading everything about hybrids! I will have to get him neutered to help
stop this madness, but will it also help with his behaviour when he gets
older? Will he be a better "dog" if he is neutered? What am I to do with
him? Wait four years till he gets out of hand? I already love him even if
all he wants from me is food!!!!! After I read WHATE, I am sure he has
quite alot of wolf in him. Is there not a way of making sure that it maybe
just seems that way? You have to look at all the ads off wolfhybrids on
Gumtree. There is a Alaskan Malamute also for sale (adoption) now for R500,
and if I was not as stupid to take a "wolf" in, I could have got myself a
decent dog now for next to nothing. I feel responsible for Snow now and
already have a very large male registered German Shepperd (who at this stage
keeps Snow in check), the not registered Mal pup (will also be neutered) and
a Jack Russel. We live on a farm and have always had 4 dogs, but that is my
limit. Lost a German Shepperd and Border Collie due to old age and hip
problems in the last year and would not have dreamed of having so much
trouble in replacing two wonderfull companions. My Malamute seems to be the
only right choice! Very clever, very obediant, never made one mess since
small puppy and even though she is still very small, she goes walking 10km
with me easily, afraid of swimming, but gets into a cano without hesitation.
She even is protective. And you must see her smile! Snow, who is twice her
age, seems to be following her example, let her eat with him and they play
endlessly. Both love stealing toiletpaper and tearing it up in the lounge!
If I knew better I would not have taken Snow in and rather got myself
another decent Mal, but what would have become of a wolf in a 2x2m vibacrete
backyard with a cement floor? At least he has a life now, even though mine
is alot more complicated.

Hi Mariana,

Their is a lot of schemes going around especially in the Western Cape
regarding dogs.

I doubt that even the malamute at R500-00 is a purebred.

As far as I know theirs no KUSA registered breeders in the Western
Cape with only about 5 around the Country. The nearest to Cape Town is
know is in East London and that is not around the corner.

A lady from CT, by the name of Samantha, even takes pictures and
pedigrees from our website place them in a catalog and meets with the
sellers in a coffee shop in showing them the pictures indicated its
the parents of her pups - it happened to be that the pups were cross
breeds between Siberian Huskies, German Shepherds and wolves.

I know its costly to buy a KUSA registered Alaskan Malamute but at the
end you know you get quality pedigreed Malamutes, generic problems is
minimal as we breed to specific rules as per KUSA regulations.

We import lines from abroad to ensure no inbreeding etc.

Best of luck with your journey.

Hi Duane.
I e-mailed the wolfsanctuary in Knysna to ask for advise and see what they replied:
"There are thousands of stories I can tell you - all horrible, but then there are hundreds of stories I can tell you - all good.  If you send this wolfdog to school and keep him on your side as a companion and are able to discipline the dog every 5 minutes by biting his ears, rolling him on the ground, peeing on it to show your dominance, the chances are that you will have an animal that will outshine any star in the long term."
Now most of that I could do, but the peeing part?  And then still the odds seem to be 100 to a 1000 that we might have succes.  I really still do not know what to do with Snow, at this stage he is a dear clever loving naughty dog and it is almost unthinkable that he will change into a wolfmonster at three.  So thanks alot for the webadress, I will contact them for advise which will maybe make any decisions easier.  Mariana
