Very simple: widespread itching is an attempt by the body to remove
dead skin because cells underneath are dividing more rapidly then
usual.
This higher rate of division is set off by high blood sugar. It's
like cells in a pertri dish whose division is limited by the amount of
sugar on the medium. If you increase the percentage of sugar in the
medium, the cell division rate will increase.
