I am a high school teacher looking to incorporate some experiential
learning into my classes. Any ideas for how to begin? I am also looking
for some good books about group trust/team building activities and how
to implement them.
Thanks!

Avi,

What subject(s) do you teach? What grade level(s)? What ability
level(s) are your students? How many students per class? How much
time per class? How much freedom do you as a teacher have with regard
to using the total school campus and surrounding environment for
learning activities--are you tied to the confines of your classroom, or
is the campus or the community at large your oyster? Are you in an
urban or rural area?

Not having this information, it is hard to answer your question about
how to incorporate experiential learning into your class. I would be
glad to give a number of suggestions, if you could provide some
information.

Even with suggestions, do understand that true experiential learning is
very dependent on the interests and motivation of the students
involved.....in other words, it should be very student-directed. That
being the case, even your best laid plans will be impacted by and
dependent on what your students want to learn. There are ways to shape
the parameters and "structure" your students decisions though so that
you meet your guidelines as well.

Get back with some information and I'll be glad to help out.

Here are some great books and people to know. First, Laurie Frank.
She has written A Journey Towards the Caring Classroom and Games for
Teachers among others. You can find her books and others at
www.training-wheels.com. Another great resource is Chris Cavert at
www.fundoing.com. Lots of free games and resources. I will also be
teaching a course Experiential Education for the Classroom as a weekend
course this fall if you are anywhere near AZ. Good luck in your search.

Michael,
Thanks for responding to my email. I teach math, as well as religious subject to high school students with learning disabilities. They often have difficulties with written language and abstract reasoning, but if things are explicit and detailed, they can learn pretty much anything. I have about an hour per class. I am located in Manhattan (so I guess you could call that urban!) but I do have a large building and gym that I am free to use. A park across the street might also be useful...?
My goals... I feel as if high school students today have learned to live in a "dog eat dog" world, everyone man for himself. They have learned to be insensitive to others and selfish, except to their own little "clique". I would like to teach them about community, leadership and the power of a team, in school and in life in general. While these may not be ideas they would be excited to learn about directly, I feel if they are taught "naturally" through activites that are otherwise fun and challenging, I may find myself an open audience.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Avi
