From 2012.1, InterSystems provides the Foundation component of HealthShare as a simple upgrade to Ensemble. This provides all of the functionality of Ensemble with very similar footprint, ease of management, performance etc as Ensemble but with two important additional sets of functionality:
1. It provides support for a number of IHE profiles. This includes all the ones that I have come across in terms of hospitals communicating with an HIE, such as XDS.b, PIX/PDQ v3 and others plus many more. It also includes support for data structures such as CCD and the ability to convert HL7 v2 messages to CCD.
2. The ability to run additional HealthShare components. Some of these components were originally part of HealthShare as it was originally developed as an HIE platform used in many regional, state and national projects. Now that HealthShare is being used by IDNs these components, such as the composite health record, and the HealthShare Patient Index can be purchased separately and run on top of the Foundation component. Some HealthShare components are new and not part of the HIE solution such as HealthShare Active Analytics.
Two paragraphs is far too short to explain the details and extent of this support, but the bottom line is that the support for IHE is extensive and it is all described on the InterSystems Web site at http://www.intersystems.com/healthshare/index.html.
A number of Ensemble customers have already upgraded to HealthShare, while just about all the new customers are opting for HealthShare, because it provides everything Ensemble did plus more, with very little reason not to go that way.
I hope this didn't sound too much like marketing
