I bought the Emprex ME1 on recommendation from one of my colleague and
from the day one could not hate it more. The most frustrating thing
about it is the remote which just does not work. After using excellent
remotes of Sky and my Sony TV, this remote was the most dull thing on
earth. I however decided to stick on with the product and retained my
patience. The product itself used to stop responding sometimes and I
had to re-boot it. The remote would only work from a close distance on
a straight line. Disgusting!
The navigation was a pain and the interface pathetic. Then one fine
day the remote stopped working for no apparent reason I could think
of. I changed the batteries but without any help. I then came across
the customer service team of Emprex in UK. As if I hadnt enough, the
customer service was of an equally low standard as the product itself.
It took them more than a month for them to replace my remote even if
my product was under the warranty. I spent a fortune speaking to them
each day on a premium number trying to make them understand my concern
and urgency as the product just doesnt work without the remote. There
is nothing called manual operations. So I was out of service for
approximately a month without the remote while the customer service
team tried to put their act together.
I finally got the remote and the product worked for about a week after
which suddenly the unit itself crashed! I had no clue. i had around
250 GB of data which I had to format but then it stopped working
still. I got too annoyed by then and so the first thing I did was pack
it and take it to Maplins. I did not want any money back and all I
wanted was to throw away this product at the bin. I bought this
product for £119 but it wasnt worth a penny too. Maplins was kind
enough to send it to their repair center as it was under warranty and
not to my surprise they informed me yesterday that the product has
been found to be faulty! They are giving me the refund.

It is the worst product I have come across and I advise everyone out
there with a smallest intention to buy this...PLEASE REFRAIN! THIS IS
A NIGHTMARE AND YOU WILL SPEND A FORTUNE TRYING TO MAKE IT WORK BUT
ALAS IT WONT!

Nice rant,
If you dislike it don't moan to us as we all love it!
Throw it in the bin as you haven't wasted much money as the ME1 is
bloody cheap!!

thanks bye,
Danny

To be fair it is not the most reliable product in the world. I bought
it last April and I would say it has been out of action for half that
time. Compatibility problem with HD and now the remote is broken. Its
eating batteries within days.
That said, when it works its great and it is pretty cheap.

works perfectly fine for me.

I've never had a problem with it crashing.
the remote (range) is a problem with the remote control, I replaced
this with a learning remote control, though that was more because with
a TV/Video/DVD/Cable/Stereo/and ME1 for me it made sense to use a
universal remote.

that said, yes the stock remote is a little underpowered,

you got one bad product, which you returned to the shop where you
bought it, and they found it was faulty and gave you your money back,
where exactly is the issue with this?
hundreds of others, (my self included) have pretty much no troubles
with this box, even when they try to make it do things it was never
designed for, (like stream video over the network), act as a samba
sever/bit torrent downloader/web server/ftp server

should have come along to the website and spoke to the makers them
self.

How ever to be fair you did have a faulty one so an exchange may have
solved all your problems.

Any way the new site is http://emprex.codejs.com/

sounds like the rant of a lunatic, IT WAS FAULTY so you just had to
return it instead of acting like a spoiled little brat.

At the outset Danny, spending 119 on a product and then wasting so
much money on it could be an inexpensive affair for you but for me it
wasnt bloody cheap!!! And therefore this moaning and ranting.

It could be the best product for you in the world but a little bit of
ranting to make less fortunate like you aware of the situation I was
in isnt that un-wise afterall. This group isnt only to praise the lord
for such a wonderful product you have but also to bring into notice to
everyone the other side of it. I was lucky Maplins refunded me but the
mental trauma I had to go thru each time it threw up is something
which no one should go thru. Hence this post.

Smile a lot buddy, it helps.
cheers

Thanks for your quick response!

Actually the ME1 iteslf is around £50 so its not too bad. (thats how
much I paid for mine)
Its very cheap for what you are getting within the box! (mine had a
free 320GB HD)

This mailing list started as a discussion group to discuss modding the device!
This is not a support forum or a sandbox for yourself.

Obviously you had a bad unit which is unlucky.

I smile all the time, I am happy with my ME1, you are the unhappy guy!

best regards,
Danny

Hello there

Unfortunately the right to expression in this world could not stop me
from expressing my own views regarding this unacceptable product in
this group. If you didnt like my expression there was always a better
way to do it than making statements like - dont moan! This mailing
list is just not for an utopian world where you get the ME1 for just
£50 with a free 320GB!
My only intention of my expressions were to let people visiting this
forum know my ordeal so that they could take a consious decision while
dealing with this product.

I smile more often than before now. now that I dont have the ME1 and I
am happier!
cheers

Hi,
Its a shame yjay you got a duff unit, I CAN ONLY SAY THAT i WAS LUCKY IF YOU LIKE , MINE WAS FANTASTIC. i HAVE HOWEVER NEVER TAMPERED WITH THE SOFTWARE OR TRIED UPDATING IT. The only minor niggle I had was randon freezing which required a reboot.
Otherwise great.

I don't disagree with your right to expression, but from what you've
described it should have been painfully obvious that you had a duff
unit, that should have been returned to the point of sale for refund/
replacement.
Instead you seem to have decided to try and contact some support line,
spent silly amounts of money wasted loads of time and in the end wound
up doing what you probably should have done to start with!

(I don't even understand why you'd try calling a support line, emprex
appear to have set up a blog page and this google group as their
support channels).

it's a shame that you wasted money trying to sort out 1 duff unit, but
I don't think that this distracts from the fact that 1) the ME1 is a
good device [i guess there is a caveat that if you get a good one!],
and 2) you wasted time and money trying to get support when really you
should have just returned it to the supplier as faulty...

clearly your experiences are in stark contrast to everyone else here
and indeed the friend who recommended the device to you...
but given that so many people are recommending it and you're the one
voice here saying...

"It is the worst product I have come across and I advise everyone out
there with a smallest intention to buy this...PLEASE REFRAIN! THIS IS
A NIGHTMARE AND YOU WILL SPEND A FORTUNE TRYING TO MAKE IT WORK BUT
ALAS IT WONT! "

what I'd say is that it's a good little media player, it does a lot
more than it's designed to do if you are happy to make it do those
things, there is a good community of people to help, I can't comment
on the UK support because I've found the unit to be so reliable that
I've never needed it. and I would advise anyone looking for a good
(and expandable -in terms of functionality and storage space with
additional USB drives) media player to go buy this immediatly.
