Hey Guys
I bought the ME1 on Saturday and installed the new firmware from
Emprex. I then installed SAMBA.using the image at
http://emprex-me1.blogspot.com/2008/06/easy-way-to-enable-samba-server.html
but two things:

after about an hour of use the system stops responding to all inputs
(can't ping the box, can't telnet in, SAMBA stopped working).

the box kicks me out of the telnet session increasingly often normally
when the connection has been idle for a few seconds.

Has anyone else experienced these things? I thought that the problem
may have been the image so I started again (reinstalled firmware and
reformatted hard disk) but I'm still kicked out of telnet after a
short amount of idle time. The system also seemed to get pretty hot -
is that also normal?

I'm trying to decide whether to take it back and get another one...

Thanks in advance for your input

This is not normal (depending on what you define as hot...)
Did you check the fan on the back. I had a similar problem, my fan did
not work. I actually had a short on the board, after repair the fan
operate normally and the device operated much better.

2nd issue could be the HDD you are using. Was this installed by the
supplier, or did you do it yourself.
You should go for a low power HDD, not for a high speed PC HDD. This
because the cooling of the device is bad anyway.

Thanks Flup
The fan does seem to be working although it is tiny so isn't shifting
much air.

Hard disk I've got is a Samsung SP2004C. I don't know how it compares
to other hard drives temperature wise (temperatures aren't in reviews)
although one review comments that it runs fairly cooly and has low
vibration so idea for a media center PC... do you know where I could
find information about this hard disk's temperature profile compared
to others? It isn't a high end hard drive so I wouldn't have expected
it to be pushing any limits.

power consumption is the thing to look for as this will translate in
heating...
for this hdd: Power consumption (active) 9.5 W

This is on the high side... but not too extreem.
Your ME1 should work with this I would think....

Can you try another HDD anyway?

Sorry - all the other hard disks I have contain information I don't
want wiped (and are also IDE) or are 2.5" laptop drives.
