Two things I need to know before going out and buying a ME1...

1) Using the network connection can you copy files FROM your PC to the
device, and also (although not as important for me) copy from the
device to your PC ?

2) When the device is switched off, does the hard drive stop spinning?

- that may seem a bit silly by my digital TV recorder keeps the HDD on
all the time - no use if you want it in the bedroom.

and maybe

3) Does it take ages to boot?

It looks an interesting device; most of the HDD media players I seen
are let down by pi** poor software or 0 chance of any bugs being
fixed, this is the only one I've seen so far that is affordable and
has some sort of software support. I hope it will do what I want....

Yes, when you install the samba server from pc to HDD and vice
versa(but it slows down navigation and playback). When you do not
install the second firmware and do not install Samba also using the
navigation on the HDD (only file copy from network)
2) When the device is switched off, does the hard drive stop spinning?
Yes, complete silence.

3) Does it take ages to boot?
no, less than 20 seconds

Ps When installing Sambaserver (to find you HD thru network on pc) I
have problems with navigation and playback.

for 1. just be a little pre-warned, it is not the fastest over the
network connection, but fast enough... around 260kb/s(at least for
me)... but any other devise like this will not be faster with the
network connection... its no down-point, its just an info ;) ... if
you hook it up on a i-net connection you could even access all your
stuff from everywhere in the world ... its like a full linux server,
but just that little bit smaller ;)

for that money, the size of the of the box and the ease of use it is a
must have toy :D

I've had mine for about a week or so now and i can't fault it.

i bought a multi changer AV scart type slitter that allows me to
switch between the 6 pieces of scart equipment that i have
and the out put igoes straight to the ME thus allowing me to record
any thing.

i have been recording the box 360 and i'll fire up a few video's from
you tube when i get a second.

As for the ease of use, can't be easier. you simply install that samba
image and then the ME becomes visible on your network, ONLY the record
folder is there so you do have to copy the files to fat 32 from the
box to make sure you can drag them off, direct access to the folder
where the recordings are made would be nice though, how ever it's not
the end of the world.

As for the out put, yeah it's good, i found it a bit bland and that at
1st but that was because i was running it through about 2 output
system recorder, so after putting it direct to the TV, yeah it's
good.

Noise is not an option compared to something like my xbox 360 that;s
noise!

Well, today I poddled off and got one, and in the initial testing of
10 minutes I've done so far its looking good. I shall update how I get
on when I've had change to play!

Not impress with the remote control though :|

yeah mate the remote can be a bit of a pain, if you have the samba running on it then it will slow it down, people on here are looking to see if they can get the system to run off a usb key which in turn would make it super fast.

for the cash though and what it does it's still a great little toy.

Shout if you need any help.

Well, to me this is still falling into the category of 'nice try'.

I'll write up a bit more of a review later, but so far there's a
number of negative points that are making me think of taking it back:

* Very poor composite video. I know its probably more of a device to
connect using component connection, but I don't have that option on
the TV I want to use it on. RGB or even sVideo out would be nice.

* Very slow and clunky front main menu interface. Better with the
later software and preview disabled, but still damn awkward to get to
anywhere - not helped by the shite quality remote that needs to be
held almost 6" away.

* Really, really, really slow file transfers over the network. One of
the reasons I got this was to save me having to burn stuff I download
onto a DVD and the playing them on my (DivX enabled) DVD player.
Seeing as I can burn a file to a disc quicker than I can transfer it
to the ME1 I'm beginning to wonder about it. It also takes the piss
somewhat when I can download a file almost as quick from the Internet
(20MBit/s) nearly as quick as I can transfer it to the ME1 (30MBit/s
if your lucky).

* Installing Samba/Donkey would be a great idea, but with them both
running it slows the interface down to a completely unusable crawl &
causes it to crash at power down. There's barely enough CPU power to
run the main interface let alone other services at well. An easy way
of disabling/enabling them would be nice, as would options like being
able to run Donkey just at nighttime (is cron available?).

On the plus side, it plays every type of DivX I can throw at it; which
is more than most HDMP's seem to be able to do.

So, I'm still pondering.....

When you say "poor" do you mean noisy or colour balance.
I found I had to adjust the source of the comp video and the ME1 to get
a good result - the source a Sat TV box was over driving the output and
I had to tell it to reduce its output (not something
you can do on all boxes) and then balance the colour, contrast etc.
After this is was as good as RGB.

The remote is bad, but mostly because it is slow to respond and imprecise. M
Mine works from a reasonable distance - 6ft/2m easily.
And I agree about the interface but again the new software is a lot better.

Agreed but you can just start it downloading and walk away.
With DVDs you have to insert a disc and reload when the disc is full.

I disabled mldonkey, because it's a hog, and I've found Samba by
itself has very little impact on performance. Copying over Sama with
mldonkey disabled is quicker too.
I think mldonkey's the culprit here - not samba.

If I want to download a torrent I telnet to the ME1 and once chroot'd
use the command line Transmissioncli for that individual torrent
Transmission is very small and quick compared to other clients, and
goes easy on the resources! In fact, video still plays fine while it
is running.
(download using apt-get, uses port 9090 for incoming so manually put
it in your firewall)

When launching it, remember to use:

nohup transmissioncli {TORRENT} &

It will download the torrent into your current directory. Once it has
finished (keep checking the nohup.out file by typing cat nohup.out)
use ps to check the processid and type kill {process} from outside the
debian chroot to end the process. Not as user friendly, but it
doesn't grind my ME1 to a halt...

"nohup" means you can quit the shell / telnet session without aborting
your torrent, and the & at the end runs the command in the background
so you can carry on doing other things.

... for the speed over network, i tried to warn you in the third post
here, but to be honest it isn't the slowest thing in the world either,
for my side i can totally live with it... but anyway, every kind of a
network storage isn't really the fastest thing in the world...

for a "full mega super duper HD fast as lightning in everything" you
just have to spend more money ;)... for that what it is and the cost,
i still think its perfect :)

A shell script run by cron can make this automated, just launch it and
forget.

That's just one step more advanced than I am at the moment!

Would be really good to create a watch folder too - ie automatically
launch transmission when a torrent is dropped in a certain folder
through SMB

Any ideas?

I mean poor as in lots of chroma noise and flickering. Composite video
suffers at the best of times from that, and the ME1 isn't particularly
bad considering, it just would be nice to have a better quality output
option. Turning down the brightness and contrast on the ME1 has
helped, but not solved the problem.

> for a "full mega super duper HD fast as lightning in everything" you

That's just the issue. For the price its quite a nice little bit of
kit, but I'm still kind of at the stage of being undecided as to if I
can live with its problems or go down the build-it-yourself route and
throw together a Linux media player/server/toaster for myself. The
problem with that is the cost. Although I have a growing collection of
PC junk that would do the job quite nicely, but I would have to get a
small-ish case that doesn't look like it was designed by a 5 year old
and cost more than the ME1, or I could go down the ITX direction and
spend a small fortune on a board and case and drive and all that
thereis.

Hmmmm.....

- I'll have to give this transmission a go now its finally installed
and see what that's like.. :>

... i absolutely don't have that issue with my one.... i really think
the image is ok as it is...

maybe an issue with the neutral earth lead in the plug?... i had a
small issue with that neutral(humming buzz), but solved it by using a
different plug...

Its an inherent problem with composite video - look at the edge of a
highly coloured area on a strong coloured background. For example the
red part of the Emprex bootsplash logo shows the effect if you look
close, or the blue on yellow progress bars during a firmware update.

See that check pattern on the colours near the edges? That's what
composite video does.

There's nothing you can actually do to stop that effect with composite
video, its the way the signals are all stuffed down one cable that
causes it. Some devices show the effect more than others, and some TVs
show it more than others and some people are more annoyed by it than
others :)

The RTD1261 chip itself can output SVideo, and can probably do RGB
too.. and its likely the RGB and/or SVideo out uses the same
connections at the Component out, so there some (slim) hope that a
firmware update and add such a feature.

You may wanna check the version you are using.

I did an apt-get which installed version 0.6.1; not only this version
is quite old (current version is 1.32) but it also apparently has
issues with trackers (see link below)

I actually ended successfully compiling the latest version 1.3.2 :D

Already tested by downloading a full file.

[Note: i added a few extra instructions for future reference to the
less geek inclined. :) ]

Instructions:

Notes: - this instructions assume that all is running inside a root
jail on the debian image; for instructions to achieve this, check
http://rtd1261.wikidot.com/tweaking-the-official-firmware#toc11
- it WILL take some time (took me about 4 hours with several
mistakes in between).

1) Download the source from the page (Linux -> Source) :
http://www.transmissionbt.com/download.php

3) Unpackage the archive with "tar -C <temp directory> -xvf <archive
file>" .

<temp directory> is the temporary directory where you want to have
the source directory.

If an error occurs, you may need to install the bzip2 package with
"apt-get install bzip2"

2) Make sure you have the following packages:

- libcurl3-dev
- libc6-dev
- libssl-dev

run "dpkg -l | grep -E "libcurl3-dev|libc6-dev|libssl-dev" " and if
any of the above dont show up, install them with "apt-get install
<package>"

Note: a lot the packages will be transfered, including some that
substitute a few with the same version but without "_mipsel" on the
name. This doesnt appear to have any side effects, however be warned.

3) Move to the source directory and run " ./configure --prefix=/usr "

If no error appears, then run "make"

If no error appears, then run "make install"

Duh, should have looked at the wiki first.

Another possibility already in the wiki is using another lightweight
client like cTorrent (not sure about the version included):

stoobs,

I had an issue with apt-get update the other day, and ended up running

# apt-get update --fix-missing

I needed to fix all this when i installed uif2iso (had a uif disk
image I needed to unpack)
aptitude then proceeded to upgrade my compiler and ssl libaries as
these were needed by the uif2iso module.

anyways, the upshot of this is that my aptitude configuration seemed
to be out of date. you might want to try and see if the fix-missing
flag is needed

Just a question:

you ARE running this after changing root to the root directory of the

Sorted.

I hadn't got gcc installed.... Duh!

Installed now, and running make.....

Thanks for your help ;-)

It was your ./configure --prefix --build=mipsel-unknown-linux-gnu
suggestion that got me past the error, and onto error messages that
were more specific and helpful ;-) (ie gcc not found)

Although, thunderstorm just started and the lights have started
flickering so not sure how far I'll get!

Hum, didnt remember that gcc wasnt installed in the image, or
installing it; probably happened on another apt-get and didnt noticed.

Glad to hear it.

However, i noticed that the configure above was incomplete, no
argument for prefix, so it will install in the default /user/local/bin
(just so you know).

And by the way, have been running it for the last few days quite well,
already downloaded 15 files.

Still have to do some things though:

- activate the directory watcher that the webpage claims it has (needs
a configuration file, but running by the command line wont create one,
need to install the gtk version in another linux box and transfer the
file to it).

- install the webserver (clutch), which requires PHP.

Hi,

I spotted the missing =/usr/ parameter and added it in ;-) The
binaries are happily living in /usr/bin/

It's generally reported as having the lowest mem usage of any client,
so it should be perfect for ME1 ;-)
I've been using it on OSX for months, and it seemed quicker and less
resource greedy than other clients including PC ones, so I wanted to
try it....

That could be ideal.... will read up on that....

clutch is integrated into transmission, from 1.30 I think. Launch the
daemon and connect to port 9091
It's not quite working yet - I get a "forwarding" web page, then a
blank one.... Working on it....

The webserver is built in to transmission, it uses shttpd.
If you launch transmission with a -f parameter it gives some output,
but can't find the web files ;-(

Venus:/home/me1# ./transmission.sh
Transmission 1.32 (6455) started
Searching for web interface file "/root/.local/share/transmission/web/
javascript/transmission.js"
Searching for web interface file "/usr/local/share//transmission/web/
javascript/transmission.js"
Searching for web interface file "/usr/share//transmission/web/
javascript/transmission.js"
Couldn't find the web interface's files! To customize this, set the
CLUTCH_HOME environmental variable to the folder where index.html is
located.
Serving the web interface files from "/dev/null"
Port Forwarding: Opened port 51413 to listen for incoming peer
connections
transmission-daemon: saved "/root/.config/transmission-daemon/
settings.json"
Port Forwarding: Stopped
Closing transmission session... done.

I've moved the web files (from the source package) to /home/web and
launched transmission-daemon from the following script:

Venus:/home/me1# cat transmission.sh
#!/bin/bash
CLUTCH_HOME=/home/web/
/usr/bin/transmission-daemon -w /mnt/hda/download/ -f

But I still get the same output ;-( I think this may be something to
configure at compile time?

I install transmission to /usr/local/transmission , so mine clutch
home directory is /usr/local/transmission/share/transmission/web/ .
If u want to use web server, u must specify it.
for me:
#export CLUTCH_HOME=/usr/local/transmission/share/transmission/web/

I always thought rtorrent was more stable and smaller than
transmission?

I had upload transmission132.rar. If anyone want try transmission just
extract and copy these files to /usr/bin.
