Dear Steven,

The global average democracy score stagnated in 2022, despite expectations of a rebound after the lifting of pandemic-related restrictions. North America retains its place as the top-ranked region, driven by strong scores in several categories, including electoral process and pluralism and political participation. However, the US remains a “flawed democracy”, as its score is undermined by intense polarisation, low levels of trust and political gridlock.

Topics covered in the report include:

  • The US midterms, institutional resilience and the receding influence of election deniers
  • The Supreme Court ruling on abortion and its impact on individual rights and freedoms
  • The challenges facing Canada after the truckers’ protests

Released today, Democracy Index 2022 assesses the state of global democracy following the lifting of lockdown restrictions and in the wake of the war in Ukraine, the effects of which have reverberated around the world. The report explains the reasons behind score changes and summarises the full global rankings, covering 165 independent states and two territories.

You can start exploring the index here.

Best wishes,

Joan Hoey

Even the processes for ranking election integrity are rigged.
