Hi,
I came back to school today and am on the mend. I managed to lose 18 lbs. in 8 days, but I don't think that's such a bad thing. I need to be in touch with whomever is writing this and talk about the Potluck.
Thanks,
Brad

Subject: [Eckstein Orchestra] Meeting Notes from Parent Mtg - 09/19/2013
Mr. Smith has been out since the start of the school year. What he thought was a bad case of the flu was diagnosed last week as viral pneumonia. He has seen a physician, and is on the mend. He hopes to return soon, perhaps next week.
Our traditional start-of-the-school-year orchestra potluck event WILL be held, but with Mr. Smith's absence, it has yet to be scheduled. Hopefully this will happen in early October. For those new to Eckstein Orchestra, the potluck is a great opportunity to meet other parents and Mr. Smith, enjoy a wide range of food from around the world, and learn about the orchestra's activities - and volunteer opportunities! - taking place throughout the year.
Volunteers will be needed for many of the orchestra's activities - assisting before and during concerts, running bake sales, field trip organizers and field trip chaperones. We will also need a volunteer to organize and run the holiday greenery sale, an important fund-raising opportunity for the orchestra. Last year we raised almost $10,000 from this one event.
Several of the larger events were briefly discussed during the meeting:
* Camp Casey, a three-day retreat for the beginning, junior, and intermediate orchestras, held in the fall at Camp Casey on Whidbey Island.
* Icicle Creek, a three-day retreat for senior orchestra, held in the winter in Leavenworth, WA.
* WWU - a one-day competition held on the campus of Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA, in the spring. Intermediate, junior and senior orchestras usually participate in this adjudicated event.
* San Francisco - in the spring of 2013, the senior orchestra traveled to San Francisco and spent three days practicing and performing with the Aptos Middle School orchestra. Possible plans for 2014 include the Aptos orchestra visiting Seattle, and/or our addition of a second exchange, with a different school.
This isn't a comprehensive list; there may be other competitions and trips to consider.
Parents who wish to volunteer for many of the orchestra's activities, especially field trips, are required to complete a volunteer form and screening form, and turn them in to the Eckstein front office. These need to be completed once a year - if you completed these forms last year... you need to do them again this year. Links to the Seattle Public Schools volunteering page, and to the two forms, can be found below:

* Volunteer Form (PDF):

* Screening Form (PDF):

Time is of the essence, especially for fall activities such as Camp Casey, so if you're at all interested in volunteering, please complete these forms and turn them in at the front office soon.
If you know of other orchestra parents who aren't on the mailing list, please urge them to sign up - it's easy to do!
