Dear All:

First of all, Mr. Tanaka was my father.  Just call me David.

Things are moving pretty fast.

Lisa Ye has volunteered for the Gresham coordinator role.

So far, the Gresham chaperones are Lisa, Tom Chiangpradit, and Patty Sather.  There is room for more (48 passenger coach) so if you'd like to chaperone, please respond or mark the Chaperone section of the Permission Slip.  The suggested contribution from chaperones is $20.  Remember, you need to have a current background check on file in the school office.

My informal student count for this trip is 33.  Don't let them fall in the Columbia.

Medical.  My earlier statement (in red below) regarding medical professionals was wrong.  According to Brian Jones, who coordinated the Camp Casey Retreat, "the *only* persons recognized by the district as authorized to dispense medications are district employees; e.g., Brad Smith or any other teacher.  No non-employee parent, regardless of professional certifications, is recognized.  What that means in practice is that you do not actually need any medical professionals in attendance; Brad is "in charge" of the medications but a parent can hold and dispense them.  Obviously, a medical professional (especially a nurse) is more likely to be comfortable handling the medications, but anyone can do it.  The school nurse will give the designated person detailed instructions. "  Thanks, Brian!

David

Orchestra Meeting Notes, 11 February 2014

Retreat Reports

We heard brief reports from the coordinators of the Camp Casey (CC) and Icicle Creek (IC) retreats. Both events were very successful.

Reports

of artisanal bacon (IC), and unlimited supplies of soft drinks (CC)

were noted, but no injuries or illnesses were reported.

A good time was, evidently, had by all.

These events are a great time to get focused practice time and attention that cannot happen during any given month of school plus they provide a unique opportunity for team building and cohesion.  For example, on a full day at a retreat students practice approximately nine hours versus 50 minutes in a given school day.  The retreats compress a month's of class room learning into a single long weekend.  The amount of growth and development that happens during this time is nothing less than amazing.  Your continued support of these events (chaperoning, organizing, supporting) is just as critical to the students efforts, so to all of you - thank you.

Festivals!

The major topic of discussion at tonight's meeting was our attendance at one or both (foreshadowing!) of two upcoming festivals.

The first, Mt. Hood Orchestra Festival (aka "Gresham"), will be

held on March 7th in Gresham, Oregon. Senior and Chamber groups only.

The second, Western Washington University Orchestra Festival (aka

"WWU"), will be held on March 14th in Bellingham, WA. All groups attend,

all but Beginner Orchestra perform.

Each festival has its benefits and risks. WWU is

closer and an opportunity for the majority of our students to

participate, with master classes and performances, and every group

brings home a trophy. The adjudication last year was problematic.

Gresham is farther away, and only a subset of the orchestras would

perform. It's been a few years since we've been there, however, and the

"let's try something new to us" opinion was a common refrain.

Going to Gresham would mean that the previously

scheduled concert on March 6th would need to move to a new date,

hopefully later in March.

A couple of days after the Parent's Meeting (today), Mr. Smith had decided that Eckstein will be attending both events.  Specifically the Senior Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra will attend the event in Gresham OR on March 7th.  All orchestra's will attend the event at WWU, though beginning will only be observing at this event.  The field trip permission slips for both events are attached.  The permission slips are also available in the office (purple for WWU and green for Gresham).  Not to put too fine a point on PERMISSION SLIPS, the permission slips are also available on the Orchestra's web site (here).

For Gresham:  We will need a parent volunteer to coordinate with the Gresham trip.  Please contact Mr.
Tanaka immediately if you are interested.  Much work has already been for this event thanks to huge efforts of David Tanaka.  We need an additional 3 parent chaperones for this event.  If you were listed as an optional chaperone, please let Mr. Tanaka know if you can or cannot attend so that we can get the proper number of chaperones.

For WWU:  Mr. Tanaka is coordinating the WWU event and will need 10 parent chaperones for this event.  Please contact Mr. Tanaka and I will forward your names on to Mr. Tanaka.

As Mr. Tanaka stated in his email earlier today, "
Medical professionals are needed to hold medications for students.  If this is you, please consider participating...you'll get to ride in the front of the bus." THIS STATEMENT IS WRONG.  SEE THE MEDICAL PARAGRAPH IN THE 3/13 EMAIL FROM TANAKA ABOVE.

Important:

You will need to have a current volunteer form filed with the school.

If you don't, you'll need to hurry since it needs to be submitted in

time to allow for the background check.  The form can be found at the

link below:

Budgets and Enrollment

Brad Smith reported that Eckstein faculty would be

learning more about the upcoming school year's budget soon, but had no

information to share. He did share, though, that the NE Seattle area has

tremendous interest and participation in orchestral music, more than

either band or choir, which bodes well for the future of instrumental

music, and especially orchestral music, at Eckstein Middle School.

Attendance for 2014-2015 is projected to be smaller than in 2013-2014.

H/T to Stephen Spencer who took notes and converted the documents to PDF before he posted them on the Orchestra's web site - thanks!

That's it.  Next Meeting is currently scheduled for March 11th at 7:00 p.m., please mark your calendars and plan on attending.  Until then, enjoy the upcoming mid-winter brea and President's Day
.

2) March 14 - WWU Orchestra Festival in Bellingham.   The Chamber, Senior, Intermediate, Junior, and Beginning groups will attend the Festival.  The Beginning group will not perform.   Your child should have brought home a purple Field Trip Permission Slip on February 13 for you to sign and return along with the $35 fee. Please complete both sides of the form.   The slip and fee due date is February 27.  Yours truly will be coordinating this trip.
