All,

Our current food system is broken and increasingly insecure.
Most of our food travels over 2,000 miles from farm to our plates --
virtually all of those miles are fueled by oil.
As the price of oil rises, so too will the price of food from this
global food supply chain.

In addition, food produced through this oil intensive global system is
increasingly lacking in critical nutrients as industrial farming
techniques strip the soil of critical trace elements. This means that
our food is not only increasingly tasteless, it is nutrient deficient
as well.

All these factors (and more) make our food system increasingly
unhealthy and less and less secure. We need to consciously and
intentionally promote, support, and build a local food infrastructure.
I have joined this group -- eatlocalwestcoastmi -- to contribute to a
conversation about this change and how we accomplish it.

Come to the Sweetwater Local Foods Market (Saturdays, 9am-1pm) at
Hackley Health at the Lakes on Harvey near Pontaluna to find a
community of people who share this concern.

I am Chris Bedford, a filmmaker, activist, and organizer, who works to
build a sustainable future for our county.
