Two East Austin Stories documentaries, "La Casa Lopez" and "Laying the
Foundation" will be screened at the new Carver Museum & Cultural Center
Theater this Thursday night from 7:30 to 9:00 as a part of the Mayor's
Book Club. They will be part of a program that includes readings from
"Writing Austin's Lives," the celebrated book of stories written by
Austin residents, through a project supported by the University of
Texas Humanities Institute.

"La Casa Lopez" tells the story of Mrs. Elena Lopez, who refused to
sell the house she and her husband bought and where they raised their
children, to make way for an office building complex just east of I-35.
The story is told by Mrs. Lopez in Spanish and detailed in English by
her daughter Mary Helen Lopez and Mark Rogers of the Guadalupe
Neighborhood Development Corporation. Mrs. Lopez is in the hospital
now, but Mary Helen Lopez will be present.

"Laying the Foundation" is about Ann Wolfe, currently the women's
Light-Heavy Weight World Boxing Champion and the holder of three other
title belts. She recently successfully defended her title and
currently is in training for a controversial fight with a male boxer.
Ann runs a gym and works with local kids in East Austin.

I will be introducing the films with Miguel Guajardo. Miguel helped to
found the East Austin Stories project, is a resident of the Guadalupe
neighborhood, and teaches in the Education Department at Texas State.

The "Writing Austin's Lives" portion of the program will be readings
from the book by many of the authors themselves, including Celeste
Gonzales reading "My Grandmother's House," Marissa Barrera reading "The
Pecan Trees," Judith Jenkins reading "Still here as African-Americans,"
and John Salazar reading "Creado en el East Side."

If you'd like a sneak preview of "La Casa Lopez" or "Laying the
Foundation" in a lower resolution, visit the East Austin Stories
website at www.EastAustinStories.org. If you click on "Site Map" you
can find the titles alphabetically, under larger subject areas.

The beautiful new Carver Museum and Cultural Center is located at 1165
Angelina Street, at Kealing Park off of Rosewood.

Hope you can make it,
Andy
