Dear friends of East Austin Stories -

(You are receiving this e-mail because you agreed to receive e-mail
from me about East Austin Stories last year. If you'd prefer not to
get these, please reply with UNSUBSCRIBE as the subject)

It’s been a year since our last program of new work and the new class
has some good work. But first, please join the facebook EAST AUSTIN
STORIES GROUP. It will be the easiest way to get news of current
screenings.

The newest work from U.T. students in the East Austin Stories class
will be screened on Thursday, May 13, at 7:00 in the Community Hall of
Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church (at East 9th and Lydia) , and
that same night at 9:00 in Kenny Dorham's Backyard, on East 11th next
to the Victory Grill. As always, there is no charge.

I hope to see you there. KUT's Julie Moody has been doing audio
pieces on her blog about the class and will be presenting a 30-minute
audio documentary about the class in the week of the screening. As
soon as I know the dates I'll put them up on the East Austin Stories
Facebook site. Please join the group for updates. You can also find
links to her blog there.

Juan Castillo of the Austin American Statesman is also doing a story.
When I have more information about it, I'll post it on the FB site.

This year's stories include pieces on a seven-year-old girl and her
grandmother; the "Filipino Soul Food" restaurant, "Cebuana;" the Salas
sisters , including Carmen who's bedroom is the very in which she was
born 76 years ago; the Holmes family and the founding of the Victory
Theater, a local pinata craftsman; Bike Cultures (Fixies vs. Low
riders); the ancient French game of Petanque; Yard Art in East
Austin; a young man at Reagan High School trying to improve his own
life and figure his direction by raising money to go intern in
Nairobi's largest slum, Kibera, Nairobi; the Springdale organic farm;
and more.

Best wishes,

Andy Garrison.
