Hi everyone,

Attached below is doc that we decided to use as a brainstorming/sharing platform, so that we can jot down ideas to par down next meeting.  Also below is the link to the doodle poll.  I picked Fridays and some Mondays, but if they don't work out we can always consider other dates.

Thanks,
Jada

Hi all,

Please remember to fill out this poll as soon as possible.  We would like to find a date that works for the most amount of people on the working group.

Thanks,
Jada

HI all,

It looks like the morning of 11/17 works for many, perhaps we should just chose that and get it on the calendar?

regards
Marianna

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately, I won't be available on 11/17, so won't be able to offer my place.  Would anyone else be open to hosting the meeting on that date, or would like to suggest an alternative location?

Thx!
Emily

Hello All,

It is perhaps better to wait until tomorrows meeting? There is a mid Nov meeting on the agenda for tomorrow, i.e., we may have two task-force meetings this month (one on Nov 2 and the other, to be determined perhaps tomorrow).

Hi all

Is the consideration here that our group should meet before the next joint task force meeting?

Otherwise I do suggest we put the 17th 10-11:30 already on the calendar even without a meeting location yet!

See you all tonight
Ines

Hannah helped us book the Atrium Room in City Hall for the Friday Nov 17th, 10-11:30am Buildings meeting.  I won't be able to attend, but Jada will.

If anyone is available and wants to do a more informal coffee on 11/10 at the same time, let me know (maybe Peet's on Castro St?).

Let us know if there is anything in particular you would like to add to the agenda for the 17th.  Jada or I will send something out before we meet.  In the meantime, we are setting up a Google drive folder where we can share files.

Would you guys be up for coordinating on research efforts via email in the meantime?  A few things I jotted down as possibilities based on what I heard from our last meetings (in no particular order):

- Understanding current Carbon Reduction Plan model and the ESAP efforts
- Coordination with top ten MV employers (Google, Linked In, Microsoft, etc..) - are there some existing efforts we should know about?
- Coordination with SVCE
- Summarizing potential and challenges for Electrification - Mike, seemed like you had thought a lot about this, along with current Title 24 limitations
- Coordination with Transportation group on Land Use
- Understanding what data is available from previous MV studies
- Summarizing what is happening internationally that we can use as models (Copenhagen, Quebec, etc..)
- Summarizing what efforts are happening in MV that we should know about (Urban Canopy, MV Sustainability Task Force, Carbon Free MV, etc..)
- Summarizing what efforts are happening more regionally that we should know about (CA state policies, CARB, etc..)
- What non-GHG benefits should we be considering and how do we track them?
- Understanding current energy use patterns in residential, commercial, municipal, industrial sectors - what data do we have, would data do we need?
- Understanding current challenges to electrification/energy efficiency/renewables in residential and commercial sectors? Ines and Gema have both mentioned some personal experiences with trying to install heat pumps for example
- Should we be considering other GHG's (methane, HFC's, CFC's) from refrigerant leakage, industrial processes, etc..?
- How to get input from the general public?

What else?

Would folks be open to signing up for some of these items?  There's a lot of information out there that we could probably all ramp up on.  Maybe we can spend Nov/Dec educating ourselves and sharing info with each other.  If this sounds good, we can move the list to a Google spreadsheet so we can make it a living doc.

Thanks!
Emily

Thanks Emily.

Regarding "Coordination with top ten MV employers (Google, Linked In, Microsoft, etc..) - are there some existing efforts we should know about?" - Have you guys seen this article about our Bay View development? I could see about having Asim Tahir from my team join us in one of our upcoming meetings to talk about some of Google's work around renewables, energy efficiency, etc. What are folks most interested in in terms of Google's efforts?

It might also be good to research further what other cities have done around electrication or in other efforts to reduce GHG around building use/land use.

Hi Emily,

Spending Nov/Dec doing research and exchanging info via google doc and at meetings sounds great to me.

The list looks good and I would like to add “preserving current city open space & utilizing it for farming/community gardens” as a point to consider. I can look into how Sonoma Co has been doing this & report at the next meeting.

Also, I will look into the city process for electric heat pump permitting, from start to finish, & report on that as well.

I cannot make it to informal coffee on 11/10 but will be at the 11/17 meeting.

Best,
Hala

I agree with Hala! This will improve quality of life, food security, reduce heat island effect, improve livability and air quality (plus sequester carbon in the soil, plants and trees!!). Many wins from one policy!

I’ll look at the following items.
- Coordination with SVCE on fuel switching
- Summarizing potential and challenges for Electrification - Mike, seemed like you had thought a lot about this, along with current Title 24 limitations
- Bay Area Air Quality Management District - model ordinances for buildings

Mike

To add?
1) For new buildings - If there were policies for impact assessment in design phase/ pre- construction phase & a related cost analysis, I think it will be beneficial.  Design phase is the best phase to make decisions because impact can be controlled earlier in the life cycle of the building. There is the option of adjusting the design based on cost & still have an environmental friendly construction. LEED does some early building stage assessments but I am not sure if it does design phase assessments, I think it will be worth exploring what other design phase assessments are out there. We do have an approach called life cycle assessments but they are very time consuming & so not adopted by the contractors. Research is on going to integrate building design tools with simplified impact assessment tools. In the meanwhile, if not all impacts but if at-least GHG emissions could be accounted for in the design phase? It would be great to check how this can be done.

Such an analysis could be used again for refurbishments.

 Comment on a proposed area

- Summarizing what is happening internationally that we can use as models (Copenhagen, Quebec, etc..)

We can defiantly learn from other countries. I have worked on comparing Canadian commercial constructions, from 10 provinces, with a Quebec LEED Silver certified building being the baseline building. The goal was to show that 100% renewable electricity will help in reducing impacts. Quebec has 99% clean electricity but 54% of the energy use demands of the buildings are still dependant on natural gas. Similar is the case for other provinces. I have so far not heard of shifting from fossil fuels to electricity in Quebec, one of the reasons being cost. Fossil fuels are cheaper? Norway is also a good example. Many other countries are using renewable energy in electricity grids including many developing countries (World bank has data on grid mix of several countries - I can't find the right link as of now). Most documentation we will find may be from developed nations.

Best,
Chirjiv

Hi Team,

What I would like to specifically offer up in the way of research: learning more about what other cities are going for their green building ordinances and compare and contrast that with the City of MTV's.

Thank you,

Lauren
