Hi Buildings/Land-Use team,

Some interesting articles/resources around trees, silicon valley, and carbon emission reductions:
  • Scientists just presented a sweeping new estimate of how much humans have transformed the planet. Interesting part of the article here: But the study also presented an even larger and perhaps more consequential number: 916 billion tons. That’s the amount of carbon, the research calculated, that could reside in the world’s vegetation — so not in the atmosphere — if humans somehow entirely ceased all uses of land and allowed it to return to its natural state. The inference is that current human use of land is responsible for roughly halving the potential storage of carbon by that land.

Marianna and I made a few edits to the recommendation list.  The latest is here:

At our last meeting, we set a goal of having the recommendations updated on the Google doc by Jan 3rd, so that folks within the team can add any additional comments before we share with the larger group on Jan 4th.

The four major sections are:
- Tree Canopy (Hema)
- Broader land use and city administrative recommendations (Marianna, Chirjiv to look at examples in Vancouver, Jada to add any transportation thoughts)
- New buildings (Lauren and Chirjiv)
- Existing buildings (Mike/David/Hala/Emily)

Ines and Thida (and to everyone in general), feel free to add anything we have missed.  The goal of the Jan 4th list is to put in ANY ideas we have.  We can do more prioritization in Feb when we need to present a limited list of 20.

I am assuming that each subteam will present their recommendations on the Jan 4th meeting.

I can put in a numbering system and do some clean up once everything is in.

Sounds good, thanks Emily! I added a little more information under the NZE Mountain View Policy idea. Chirjiv: please feel free to add or edit what I had entered. It was interesting to see that there is precedent with other cities having created similar policies (Palo Alto, San Francisco, Santa Monica) that require additional savings beyond Title-24, and, in some instances, solar energy/green roof requirements.

Hi Emily,

Below are couple of recommendations I’d like to add based on the mtg we (Gema, Marianna & I) had with Bruce Hurlburt, MV Parks & Open Space manager. The City is striving to meet their Urban Canopy Cover target (increase from 17% to 22% in the next twenty yrs) but struggling with narrow sidewalks, opposition from property owners, and limited available open space. The available open space (12 acres next to Cuesta Park, 10 acres next to the municipal bldg & some federal land by moffett) is very difficult to convert to community gardens or tree orchards because sports & other groups are pushing to use it for their needs. Budget is limited & cannot support lawn conversion, recycled water, or green tops programs.

My recommendations:

- It is essential for Parks & Open Space dept to regularly meet with environmental sustainability dept, city planners, city council & city manager, to work cohesively on implementing sustainability practices. For example, require new buildings to plant native/mediterranean trees, ensure new sidewalks are wide enough for tree planting, educate the public/home owners on importance of canopy planting, etc.

- Increase community & native plant gardens in current open space, and utilize cooperation of nonprofit organizations such as conopy.org and CA Native Garden Foundation to help manage these projects.

From our steering committee meeting tonight - Hannah needs a copy of our recommendations by tomorrow morning to distribute for Thursday's meeting.  I will be editing the recommendations tonight.  Sorry not to have realized that timing earlier.
