Yes the old Jewish man is adorable, I want to hug him. BUT!
My problem with this dear Sami is that we have been saying all this for at least 40 years and called terrorists. But when a holocaust surviver says it, he is great and wise.
I do not buy it. Remember the blank blank front who always said a democratic Palestine for Christians, Jews, and Moslemms?
Jews like Illan Paps get great reviews ut Palestinian authors who have written better and with better politics seem to be neglected.

My dear good friend Samia H.:
I whole heartedly agree with your sentiments. It is totally unfair that Holocaust survivors and Israeli progressives receive far more attention when they speak about Palestine 🇵🇸 as compared to the Palestinians, who are the victims of the unending Nakkba.
But, the struggle of the Palestinian people today and their assertion of their rights and dignity require that we find any tool to support that continued struggle.
Long ago, I learned that there is no guarantees for justice or fairness in this life. The only justice is what we fight for and persist on fighting.

How about focussing on the thousand and thousands of members of Unions who have come to our support recently. What do we just listen to upper middle class people with academic or other bourgeois standing. Does not the voice of those unions who hold real power nor palliative words mean a lot more. Should we not connect and thank them? Should we not share their statements of support?
They are voices with potential power to palliatives that keep us smiling and feeling good.

I think you have a great point. Should we, all as a group of activist, be able to bring the dimension you mention in solidarity with the cause of the Palestinian people, it will be a major breakthrough in favor of the struggle.
Everyone of us can only do we best we can.

Your words are appreciated. I think small tokens of appreciation and support for unions mean a lot. Their importance lies in how we view our efforts. Yes, we have no leadership and no leadership party. We are left on our own. But i am optimistic that international working class leadership with claws might emerge.
We may be persuading the propagandized brains, yes, but they have no power. Things are getting worse on the ground in all the Arab world. And the cherry atop the propaganda train is a holocaust museum in UAE.

I adhere strongly to your opinions Samia and think it’s high time that we begin to value such voices as those of labor unions and those mass numbers that matter just as much and should not be ignored as they had been. Power to the people!
Without denigrating the opinions of any Palestinian or Arab leftist/progressive, I also understand the strong voice of a well respected man such as Gabor Mate and others from “the enemy’s side” because it really feels that they are able to have a different kind of effect and open up the eyes of those who do not understand this ongoing crisis as deeply as many of us do on this list-serve. Isn’t there some value in that?
Such a museum counters the many Palestine museums or the like that have been opening in various places around the world including in the US and one here in DC about 2 years ago. May there be more in the years to come.

I do value those voices within highly narrow limitations. But I value our own confidence far more and also our own genuine scholars much more. I think those voices are part of a discourse that keep us busy participating and responding, as does the UN. We have to stop responding, get out of the box their dialogue put us in and create our own priorities. None of those scholars who are emanating from the other side seem to highlight the right of return, self determination, return of Palestine, reparations, democratic rights, return of stolen property, disarming of the Zionists, and none call for the right to armaments for Palestinians and the right to self defense. If when they do, I would call them brothers in arms.

I do not disagree with a thing that you say. However, these folks, Noura Erakat, Ali Abou Nima and Rashid Khalidi have addressed a small fraction of those major issues. We should be calling upon these things and the all encompassing right to self-determination as a whole more frequently!! Yes, we must prioritize.
Still, and in parallel I find the voices of specifically a man such as Mate to be of high value in parallel to our brothers and sisters.
