For those searching their Phillips ancestors in Chatham Co. NC; the Fall Creek Baptist church minutes are available from Wake Forest University.  I don't recall the exact years right now but I believe they run from about 1818 until the early 1830's.  The minutes are photocopied and difficult to read and there are hundreds of pages.  The cost was about $60.  I ordered the minutes because my 3rd great-grandfather was a member of the church during that time period.  His name was William Adkins Henry and he married Susanna Phillips in 1825.  William, Susanna and their 4 young children migrated to western Tennessee in 1834. I was hoping that the minutes might identify Susanna's parents if they were also members of the church.  Although the minutes named a few male Phillips as members there was no way to make a definite connection to my Susanna.  Although I struck out and didn't find any info on Susanna, I found the minutes fascinating.  Much of the minutes amounted to gossip like who drank too much, who was seeing someone else's wife, who was pregnant (without benefit of marriage), etc.  A lot of the minutes centered around the resolution of disputes.  Disputes involved families and sometimes men vs. men and women vs. women.  For those researchers interested in the personal lives of our ancestors the minutes provide quite an insight.

Wake Forest University also has the minutes of the Bear Creek Baptist church which was near the Fall Creek church.  I haven't ordered them yet but intend to do so soon.

Do you know what dates?  I was told the old Bear Creek Records disappeared in the 1920's from the hands of the family who owned them and none of them own up today as to their whereabouts.  The oldest Bear Creek records are said to have gone back to the middle 1700's.  There were no Phillips in that area of what is today Lenoir Co.

Wake Forest also has the old copies of the NC Recorder or whatever it is called - the statewide Baptist magazine.  I have found the obits of some of my ancestors in it.

Have any of you see mention of Joel Phillips, wife Phoebe--probably a Saunders, or their son Labourn Phillips? According to land records, they lived in the Bear Creek Community along Tyson's Creek in the early 1800s. Labourn's birthdate is estimated as 1794 in NC. He later married Anna Mariah Deaton and they moved to VA where he's credited for founding the town of Dante, VA in Dickenson County. Joel and Phoebe supposedly lived and died in Randolph Co. NC, but I have no records to prove this. Any clues are appreciated!
