Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform launched in 2009 in New Orleans where creative projects, from eccentric endeavors to innovative technology, could seek funding from the public. One year later, Time magazine named it one of the 50 Best Invention of 2010. Over the years the enterprise has better shaped its mission towards the democratization of culture and creativity and established to donate 5 percent of after-tax profits to arts and music education as well as to organizations fighting inequality. Moreover, it encourages its employees to pursue their own creative projects and to attend trainings in the field of art, business and technology. A social impact report on the world will be published next year. In the meantime, Professor Mollick from University of Pennsylvania considers Kickstarter as a phenomenon able to assess the wisdom – or madness – of the crowd.
