Emerging Strategies to Engage Men in Addressing the Gendered Impact of COVID-19: A Virtual Forum

When: September 22, 2020, 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. (Link for registration will be soon to follow!)
Where: Zoom link to be sent to registered attendees

Why: Learn about key challenges, opportunities and strategies for engaging men in the response to COVID-19

Dear colleagues,

The data and reporting are increasingly clear that men have specific vulnerabilities and roles related to COVID-19, and there are key gender considerations that underpin them. Some of these include men’s riskier health behavior, such as their lower propensity to wear masks, men’s historically limited roles in caregiving, and increased rates of domestic violence during home confinement. In the urgency of controlling the pandemic and ensuring critical health services, little attention has been paid to date on the potential positive role men can play and how to shift harmful masculinities to mitigate the effects on the pandemic within relationships, households and communities.

This year’s METF exchange meeting will offer participants a space tohighlight and explore possible opportunities for positively engaging men when responding to COVID-19 through adaptations of existing health programming in the areas of maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH), HIV and other infectious diseases (ID), and family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH).

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Do you have experiences and/or results from research or programmatic efforts with men to address the gendered impacts of COVID-19? If so, we invite you to apply to present at this year’s virtual forum! If selected, you’ll have the opportunity to present your work and facilitate a session where participants will discuss and provide feedback on your work. We are looking for presentations on the following topics:

Data and the gendered impact of COVID-19 on men’s health and well-being
Men and mental health and stress mitigation during COVID-19
Men and gender-based violence in the time of COVID-19
Men and household and caregiving roles during COVID-19
Men and work-related pressures during COVID-19

No more than three proposed presentations will be selected. Those presenting the most robust in terms of data, innovation, and addressing gender and power dynamics in working with men on COVID-19 in the context of HIV, ID, FP/RH and MNCH, will be selected for presentation.

If you have an idea you’d like to present, please complete this form. The call for submissions closes on September 1. Upon selection, you will be notified and asked to put together a presentation for review by September 11.

Questions or trouble submitting your idea through the Google form? Please get in touch with Dominick Shattuck at dsha...@jhu.edu.
