Hello Friends of EGR:

My name is Rena Turnham and I am the Director of Communications and
Administration for EGR.

We have been working on a new database and making improvements to
facebook and twitter, as well as the website. So even though you have
not heard much from us we are very busy at EGR! We are revamping the
Google Group and we are hoping we can use this once again as a place
to share ideas!

We have also been working on a public narrative project in the Diocese
of Spokane as a result of a Trinity Wall Street Grant. This project
will serve as a pilot for future leadership training. We also have a
newsletter coming out soon.

But more importantly...we’d like to know what you have been up to...in
your congregations and dioceses and what have YOU been doing with
your .7%???? We can't wait to hear from you!

P.S. Don't forget to find us/like us on facebook at:

And remember our website at: www.e4gr.org!

Good morning Rena

The Diocese of MD gives its 0.7% through a grants process. Since we
began in 2007 following a resolution at our 2006 Convention, we have
given more than $99,000. Our website is http://www.globalmission.ang-md.org/
. We also have a Diocesan Lenten Project. The lessons are written
for children through grade 3 but all are welcome to particpate. We
have helped build a playground in Ghana through "Pennies for the
Playground", supplied meals for children in South Africa through
"Bread for Itipini", collected for "Nets for LIfe", and this year
supplied sunflower seeds for the women of the Ochan Selp-Help Alliance
in Uganda ( http://www.ochanalliance.org/ ). In 2011 our project will
be tree planting in Haiti. All these projects, and all the granted
projects, have a direct diocese connection.

God's peace,
Madeleine Beard+, Deacon

Thanks for sharing your story Madeleine and nice to meet you. Great
website! We are putting a monthly newsletter out once again and we
hope to share some stories about the unique responses out there to our
call to support the MDGs. Sounds like you have a good combination of
both action and reflection. We are also working on new liturgical
materials.

Hello Rena & EGR Friends,

At the urging of our late bishop, Jim Kelsey, the Diocese of Northern Michigan, at its 2005 annual meeting, committed 0.7% of our annual budget to a Diocesan MDG Fund.  Given the fact that we are a relatively resource-challenged diocese, this amounts to about $3,000 a year.  Proposals are submitted to our diocesan Justice and Peace Committee which recommends one or more projects to the Diocesan Council and with their approval to our annual convention.

Because we have an active and ongoing working relationship with communities in Haiti, our donation has gone there for the past four years.  In 2006 and 2007, the fund helped support programs in St. Simeon Parish, Croix-des-Bouquets, including a children's nutrition program, mobile medical clinics, assistance to children coming to the US for essential surgery via Childspring International in Atlanta, and HIV/AIDS education programs for youth.  Our 2008 and 2009 funds provided relief assistance -- mainly food, medical and dental supplies and home repairs -- to the people of Crochu, a remote and very poor community in the mountains north of Port-au-Prince, following the 2008 hurricanes and the devastating January 12, 2010, earthquake.  Our cooperative efforts with the people of Crochu are also supporting local sustainable development and microenterprise projects including a small medical clinic run by a young nurse who was born and grew up in the community and a women's sewing cooperative.

Individuals, organizations and churches in and outside our diocese also contribute to this fund.  An article about our most recent mission in March, 2010 may be found at http://www.upepiscopal.org/Hiawathaland/May%20CIH%202010.pdf.

Blessings and Peace,

Burt Purrington

Dear E4GR Friends,

It is so inspiring to read about everyone’s MDG work!  Thirty years ago, the Diocese of Upper South Carolina began a relationship with the people of Cange, Haiti.  Now, this was before the MDGs were even a glimmer in someone’s eye, but over the years, we have established an agricultural program, teaching villagers how to improve the soil and grow their own crops; built a water system so that clean, safe water can be brought up the mountain without women having to carry it; built a church, a hospital, a school, and a sewing center.  We have volunteer doctors, engineers, teachers – numerous lay people – who travel to Cange to volunteer, and we enjoy and appreciate a partnership with Partners in Health.  Since the earthquake, the hospital and the water system have become overburdened, so we are working harder than ever.  Outside of a separate fund for Cange that has long been in place, a portion of the 0.7% of our “statement of mission” that is set aside for MDG commitments recently has been designated for the “Bread and Water” Campaign to ensure that the water system in that part of Haiti receives needed repairs and that the growing agricultural program continues to thrive.

Portions of our MDG funds have been used to provide scholarships to school children in Uganda and in Ecuador, and to support ERD’s Millennium Fund.  Last year’s MDG portion of our budget was around $18,000, and we set aside money to provide grants to parishes who needed financial assistance with their own MDG projects.  A committee reviews the grant applications and selects those that appear to have likely sustainability and will serve a greater number of those in need.

You can learn more about our MDG efforts at www.edusc.org . Our MDG parish contacts look forward to new communications from E4GR.  Thanks so much for all that you do to enable others to act as the body of Christ in the world.

Angela Daniel

Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina
