Prayers for the Walk of Witness
(adapted by St. Edmund's Episcopal Church, Pacifica, CA) Leader 1 On Thursday the bishops gathered at the Lambeth Conference from every continent on earth will walk through London, accompanied by the British Prime Minister and other leaders. Let us join in their Walk of Witness as we pray with them for the fulfillment of the eight Millennium Development Goals: 1. To eradicate extreme hunger and poverty; 2. To achieve universal primary education; 3. To promote gender equality and empower women; 4. To reduce child mortality; 5. To improve maternal health; 6. To combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases; 7. To ensure environmental sustainability; 8. To develop a global partnership for development. Let us pray. Leader 2 May we witness gladly to God's loving purpose for the whole human family, made known to us in the Good News proclaimed by the Good Shepherd. (brief period of silence) Leader 1 Jesus said, "I have come that all may have life, People And may have it in all its fullness." (John 10:10) Leader 2 May our eyes may be opened to recognize Christ, present among us in the poor and needy of the world who are waiting to be fed. (brief period of silence) Leader 1 Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these, People You did it to me." (Matthew 25:40) Leader 2 May we call expectantly on the Holy Spirit who alone can empower us to make poverty history in our day. (brief period of silence) Leader 1 Jesus said, "I have compassion for the crowd because they have nothing to eat." People The disciples said to him, "Where are we to get bread enough to feed so great a crowd? (Matthew 15:32-33) Leader 2 As we are fed at this Eucharist today, may we receive it gratefully as a sign of God's desire and intent to feed not only us but this whole hungry world. (brief period of silence) Leader 1 "Jesus took the loaves and the fish; and, after giving thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples. People And the disciples gave them to the crowds, and all of them ate and were filled." (Matthew 15:36-37) Leader 2 With our support and encouragement, may our elected leaders give more generously of all that God has given us as a nation, and may we ourselves do all that we can to help in the fulfilling of the Millennium Development Goals. (brief period of silence) Leader 1 Jesus said, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, People And you will be my witnesses to the ends of the earth." (Acts 1:8)
The EGR Prayer – All together
Most loving God, as your desire for mercy for the poor is unrelenting, may we be unrelenting in our pursuit of mercy for all; as your compassion for the suffering of the poor knows no limit, may our heart overflow with compassion for all; as you long for justice for the poor, may we strive for justice for all. Open our eyes to the structures of oppression from which we benefit, and give us courage to accept our responsibility, wisdom to chart a sound course amid complexity, and perseverance to continue our work until it is finished. Breathe your life-giving Spirit afresh into your Church to free us from apathy and indifference; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.
