Hey, guys.  It's Colin Gray here.  I'm a Canadian water polo player (don't hold it against me!) who played for Ben Quittner at the University of Michigan.  Ben's recruited me to come play with you guys in this years Canadian league play.  I'm planning to come join in for the tourney in Ottawa (its actually my hometown).  Haven't bought tickets yet, but planning to be there for Thursday night.

Quick question -- where are most of you planning to stay?  I can help with hotel suggestions if you need them.  Also, what pool is being used for the tournament -- Carleton or Ottawa U?  Finally, I can definitely show you guys around town for a night out depending on our tourney schedule -- when are our games?  Can someone send a schedule if you have it?

Thanks.  Looking forward to meeting everyone in Ottawa.

Best,

Colin

Hi Colin,

Thanks for the interest to play, but you're not on the roster and you
cannot play. Season has started in November and roster deadline was in
January.
I hope to play with you next season.

Philippe,

Thanks for the email.  I'm bummed we won't be able to work it out for this season (especially with this upcoming tournament in Ottawa!).  I didn't realize all the players had to be registered by January.  Obviously, if there's any other options for getting me on the roster for this year, just let me know.  Otherwise, put me down for next year and we'll go from there.

I have already bought my ticket and don't have to swim with no subs, so I'm ready to go. That being said, I think that going with less than 2 subs is not a good idea.

As far as I know, the following people are (or were at one time) able to go:

Pasha
Martin
Alex S.

Anyone else available? 2 more and I think it's worth it.

The attached is the schedule currently on the Water Polo Canada website.

I think if we win 2 of the 3 games in the round robin we will qualify for the top 6 to go to Calgary in June. If we only win 1 of the 3 round robin games, we need another team in our division to lose all 3.

Sorry that Mitchell could not make this trip, he was ready to play as
much as needed. His right thumb is broken where it meets his hand,
that is the worst place for a finger break and he is in a cast for 4
weeks (just happened on the 7th at practice in Winnipeg). Hopefully he
will get the cast off on the 5th and be able to go to Cadet Nationals
with Bushido, and then the Youth National Team camp two weeks later.

He will be ready for Dynamo next season, and maybe with a couple of
other young guys with the same skill level (but a bit smaller).

Actually guys, getting back to the comment about splitting up the
national team, that is too much like the Women's CSL which killed the
national league (I'll discuss that more in a personal email chain if
anyone wants). Canada is too small a player pool for that concept, an
open market is the best way for the men, the missing link is possibly
simple player contracts that give clubs some security if they invest
in a player from the national team, ie pay costs, travel etc and then
the next year farm their services out to another contender.

The idea of an international squad like Dynamo is great for the league
since it keeps older guys playing in a social network while passing
skills on to young players. Dynamo is just a bit too much on the side
of "the social" and not enough on the side of "the mentor". That will
change in 2007-08 when I promote 3 or 4 Bushido Youth players for
guidance in the water and under fire. They won't be able to afford all
the events on the coast but they will be able to say in the fall which
events they can afford if the league has the vision and foresight to
plan and disclose schedules early enough (another issue altogether). I
will cater our Youth Team events to the CWPL so that the boys can play
as many games at the highest level possible.

In September Nick will be living in Winnipeg for a few months and this
will be a great opportunity for our young guys to hear from him at
every practice about their focus and development along a Men's league
plan instead of a kids "3 tournament season" plan. It is very hard to
teach kids about practice purpose and intensity when they only play
10-15 games per season and they have to travel 500km (300+ miles) for
the nearest competitor. So, I am working behind the scenes to help
bolster the Dynamo effort in 2008.

Maybe Dynamo can start a sort of scholarship fund, where we pay the
costs of 1 promising young player per year to travel with us to
tournaments, as long as he keeps his school grades up, etc.

I know some guys here in Vancouver who have been contributing for
years to a scholarship fund at Simon Fraser University for this
reason. They have expressed frustration at how poorly administered
this fund is and I think it might be possible to lure them into
contributing via Dynamo instead. In exchange we could put sponsor
logos on our jerseys, suits, etc.

Just a thought, but it might help step water polo in Canada up to a
new level...
