Just to remind all of you….since May 2006 was a long time ago and that annoying reporter from the MPWPL has been filling your head with useless information for quite some time…the Regina Squids won it’s 1st ever Senior Men’s National Championship in Montreal! They were led by the 3 amigos; Kevin Graham (MVP), Robin Randall (MVG), and Noah Miller (All-Star), who dominated teams using their speed and quick execution. They may be a force for years to come as Graham is only 20 years old and his best is yet to come. 2006 seemed to be the year where the Hamilton Aquatic Club put their mark on Canadian water polo once again by winning a silver medal. Their team is filled with veteran talent and National team goalie Nick Youngblood was stellar between the posts all of last year. The Ottawa Water Walkers (now known as the Gatineau Water Walkers) finished 3rd, but was the only team to give the Squids a run for their money last
year. The Water Walkers defeated the storied CAMO Roadrunners in the first round of the playoffs only to lose to the Squids in overtime the next day. The Water Walkers are a young team full of promise and are led by Canada’s sharp shooter Kevin Micthell and power forward Aaron Felltham.
The Pacific Dynamo capped the top 4 losing the bronze medal game to the Water Walkers. The Dynamo are a new club in Canada filled with many seasoned veterans who have played water polo in other countries. They are a team full of talent, and thus, should once again pose a threat to its opponents. The Roadrunners, Dollard Devils, Toronto Golden Jets, Calgary Torpedoes, Ste-Foy Hydres, and the CDN Yetis took part that same weekend in May in the Tier II Senior Men’s National Championships.
Everybody will be gunning for those feisty Squids, but will they even be able to qualify for the National
final with 2/3 of the 3 amigos playing in Australia? Can Noah Miller carry this team alone? Will the aging Hamilton Aquatic Club be able to repeat their successes from last year? The Water Walkers will be in the same boat as the Squids losing their 2 superstars to the league down under. Last year’s edition of the CWPL was not complete as the Pacific Storm did not take part. Well….the highflying Storm club is back and stacked as usual with training centre athletes. All-stars Thomas Marks and Dan Stein will also be lost for most of the season for Storm due to the professional league in Australia. The Roadrunners have picked up Jean Sayegh, the dangerous versatile left-handed shooter from Ste-Foy, as they look to move back up to the Tier I Championship. Although the Devils have had much success at the younger age groups, they are still in search of their 1st senior men’s banner. With 6 athletes at the Calgary training centre and a
former Commonwealth Games MVP in Nathanial Miller, the Devils should be considered a favorite for this year’s title. The Yetis have combined with Laval to add more depth to their short-stacked team of 2006. The Torpedoes have been rumored to be in contact with ex-National team superstar Vladimir Cosic. Cosic is originally from Calgary, but played for Dynamo last season.
There are so many questions surrounding the league this year….who knows who will be crowned National Champion come June 2007. There are so many unknowns this year that anything can happen; the banner is up for grabs. So will 2007 mark the year where there is a new parity in Canadian water polo? Will this year be the end for dynasties just as free agency has done to the NHL, NFL, MLB, and NBA? I guess you will have to stick around to find out!! You’ll have to keep checking the Water Polo Canada web site for updated statistics, rosters, and
news about recent CWPL events such as the first weekend of the Pacific Conference in November and Quebec Conference in December.
