Before giving this suggestion to the Chairman, DGTC, I want opinion and suggestion from members on this and after that, I shall send it accordingly.

The Chairman,

DTC,

New Delhi.

                                                             Date: 15.11.2013.

Sub: Reservation in seats for senior citizens in DTC buses.

Sir,

DTC has reserved two seats in every bus which are quite inadequate. The reservation for the ladies is 8 to 10 seats and 4 seats for handicapped persons. The population of handicapped is much less than that of senior citizens and it is often noticed that the seats for handicapped are not used by them and general passengers occupies them while senior citizen looks on helplessly.

2.       The Delhi Metro has merged seats for Sr. Citizens and handicapped into one category and I, therefore, suggest that the DTC should also adopt this practice by merging these seats for optimum of them.

It is a good suggestion. Since there are rare cases of handicapped persons travelling in DTC buses, seats meant for such persons are appropriated by general public, even by young and fit. In view of a large number of senior citizens travelling by DTC buses, 2 seats reserved for them are inadequate. As a result many of them have to travel standing in the bus. Another difficulty faced by them is that in most of the buses, two seats reserved for senior citizens are not located on the low floor but on an inconveniently high position just behind the driver’s seat. This can easily be remedied.

Gupta ji!

I don't know if you have noticed or not. The DTC has played a cruel joke with senior citizens. In new reservation plan, they have reserved the two raised seats behind the driver seat for senior citizens.

They expect senior citizens to climb up 2 stairs and fit them in those uncomfortable seats? Bad one.

Further to the suggestions made earlier on the reservation of seats for senior citizens, it would be appropriate to position/mark the seats at a particular location in all the buses for the senior citizens to locate and identify easily, thus avoiding the search hither & thither.

The bus stop platforms may also be made senior citizens-friendly by providing a step or two for going up & down, as the presently constructed ramps are at far ends of the platforms.

Yes, I have noticed.  The seats just behind the driver is on the recommendation by one of the Deptt. may be social welfare. At the time of recommendation, the seats behind were not at higher lever. Due to this, it becomes difficult for sr. citizens to occupy these seats.  Also, the locations of ladies seats, handicapped and sr. citizens in some buses are not at the designated spots. Will saend suggestions to the DTC soon.

DTC should increase the number of seats reserved for senior citizens from 2 to 6

Yes, it is a very good suggestion to merge the two quotas of Sr. Citizen & physically handicapped.
It is also the genuine need to have this quota in the last row near to Conductor and not behind driver as the seats there are on a higher platform and not easily accessible.
