No. SKG/PMO/278 26 Jan 2023
श्री नरेंद्र मोदी, प्रधानमंत्री,
7 Lok Kalyan Marg,
New Delhi-110 001.
Sir,
PMOPG/E/2023/0023234
Reg: Research areas.
Concerned Department: Council for Scientific & Industrial Research
Re-use of Inter-Locking tiles: Now-a-days environment-friendly interlocking tiles are used for pavements. These are generally made by using ash released by power plants or other factories. These are otherwise solid and can sustain a considerable load. As a regular activity, municipalities keep on changing these tiles after they have served the pre-determined life. The major reason of replacement is wear and tear of top surface which is not able to maintain itself in glazy mode due to friction caused by movement of pedestrians and vehicles. However, the point is, these tiles even after retirement with a rough surface are fit for any usage where rough surface does not matter. For example, these possibly can replace bricks in building construction. If done, this will be a complimentary action of two different activities and serve dual purpose. Besides reducing the huge quantum of debris it will save soil from further degradation by avoiding digging of earth for manufacture of bricks. It will also save the environment by avoiding generation of considerable quantum of heat in the manufacturing process of bricks. It is requested that CSIR may be advised to undertake research in this area and come up with suitable models of interlocking tiles which can, after retirement, provide a substitute of bricks.
Use of Road Side Dust: Pollution in or country has touched astronomical heights, and is impacting all of us in an extremely adverse manner. One of the aspects is shortage of landfill sites. One specific item which is dumped in landfill sites is dust collected from road side. Due to non-utilisation of this dust for road/building construction the same gets its way to landfill. As the dust is very fine, even after dumping it can still cause pollution by flowing along with wind.
A substantial quantity of such dust is collected from road side daily in cities. Besides occupying space, the accumulated dust dumped in the landfill can also cause the land to become unusable for any other purpose by making it barren. It is therefore requested that CSIR may explore alternate usage of this dust for some industrial purposes or to develop some process to make it useable for road/building construction. This will not only save landfill space but also provide a valuable substitute of some other depletable natural material.
For consideration please.
