Hi im working on my bike and a part is severely rusted on, i need either a large bench vice or a breaker bar to remove it and i was wondering if there was a way to check if either of those exist in the hackerspace before i bring it in?

Thanks in advance :D

I am unsure TBH, but certainly make
sure you stock up on plenty of WD-40!

PlusGas is a really good penetrating oil. Bog standard WD40 isn't so good although they haven't tried WD40's specific penetrating oil. Heat can help, but depents on what else is near it. Electrolosys can clear some corrosion, but relies on all the metals and parts being compatible with what ever else is in the solution.

Apologies for my vagueness, its a BSA threaded bottom bracket cup. Its a second-hand bike so i think the previous owner didn't grease the threads sufficiently and its rusted pretty badly, aluminium frame and steel BB as well is pretty prone to this kind of thing. I've tried getting as much leverage on the cup as possible with a short hand tool and soaking it in penetrating oil for a few days, and as much heat treatment as possible with a hairdryer, but at this point i think i just need more leverage. I want to either use a breaker bar or lock my tool bit into a table vice and use the whole bike as a lever. If that doesn't work im just going to put some cuts in the bottom bracket with a hand saw and collapse it inwards to get it free. This bottom bracket is for the bin anyway so no biggy, i just really dont want to strip the threads on the frame.

The thing about breaker bars (I have a metre long one I use on my van wheels, with a piece of scaff bar to extend the torque) - is that you really can break smaller screws and heads with them.

Torque is definitely good (and extending the torque with something like a scaff bar around your existing spanner may be an option) but the oil options are definitely the better routes.

Let us know how you get on!

P.s. You'd be welcome to borrow my breaker bar, but I live the wrong side of Manchester for ease of borrowing. :)
