I don't like it when there are three that seem like possible definitions. I'll take 1 and 3 today (and it's probably the one I eliminated!).

I think it might be a verb, and of the two, I choose #10.  It has a late-19th-century phraseology about it that suggests Wright, which is one of Mike’s favourite sources. I will resist the appeal of the other verb, #9, and vote for #8.

The connection to an older form of "beef" is so obvious that 1 and 3 have to be fake, but I'll fall for them anyhow.

I'll go with the gears, and I guess the hexagons since I got there without finding anything else I belived.
