Unless too many players notify me that it’s not as recondite as I thought, the word for the new round is:

GAMEGALL

Please let me have your proposals for a definition (the only restriction being that they not betray knowledge of what it actually means), by the deadline of Friday 26 December at 21h15 CET, and for which you will find a countdown timer here: ⏱️. That is a very long deadline (68 hours or so), but given the season there will be a full 24 hours when players will have other demands on their leisure time and attention. I wish you all a good Christmas, or winter holiday if you prefer, and look forward to reconvening on 26 December.

For your fake definition, consider using this link: defin...@boargules.com. Most email clients will do the right thing if you click it. If you don’t want to click it, then please copy it. I keep insisting on this point because, after more than a year, some players are still sending definitions to a different address.

You should get an immediate automated acknowledgement, if you have sent the definition to the right address, and I will also acknowledge all submissions personally, though that will be less than immediate.

GAMEGALL: What we feel when we narrow down the list to three definitions that might be correct, pick two at random to vote for, and it turns out to be the third,

Merry Christmas to all.

There are 36 hours left of this extended holiday submission phase, and to encourage occasional players and lurkers to join in the holiday fun, any player whose name is not one of the 15 on the latest rolling scores list will get an automatic dispensation from dealing. So feel free to take part without the chance of getting landed with the hassle of dealing.

So far I have seen and acknowledged definitions from

  • Eric Boxer

  • Debbie Embler

  • Tim Lodge

  • Judy Madnick

  • Efrem Mallach

  • Dan Widdis

The deadline is Friday 26 December at 21h15 CET, and you will find a countdown timer here: ⏱️.

Hi Paul,

I sent you a definition, but I don't see my name on the list so I sent it again.

Santa Paul made a list but needs to check it twice? 😉

That is because my spreadsheet constructs the list of submitters from the inbox of defin...@boargules.com. That is a simple automated way to eliminate dixons and NADs, and count only genuine fakes. But it does rely on players sending their fakes to the address specified in the announcement. I normally catch ones that haven’t been, eventually, but this deal I hadn’t got around to it yet.

Even if you could, the word is not in either of the two official Scrabble word lists, so it would get challenged off.

Some day I might take a look to see what proportion of the words that have been played in Dixonary are good in Scrabble. I know there are a couple, keckle for one, which is in the WESPA list.

That’s if you use the original rules from 1948.

As a friendly family game, we are using the Real Rules.

I didn’t challenge “pog” played by my nephew who grew up in Hawaii, and nobody challenged my accidental “ey” that I didn’t know wasn’t officially a Scrabble word.

Everyone except me also got to re-use the double/triple letter/word scores on subsequent turns, to make it more fun for them.

😊

I had someone play qgp in Words with Friends recently and the game took it.
QGP stands for quark-gluon plasma

In adulthood I've rarely played the game face-to-face other than by BSPA/Wespa tournament rules. They only recognize the 2-player fornat, with clock, and are more recent and much more comprehensive than the ones inside the box lid.
Online sites like ISC, and also Wordfeud, use the official word-lists, though usually not the latest editions. So you can now play OK in a tournament, but not on Wordfeud.
And we've seen onlookers shake their heads in disagreement at words that are in the official word lists, especially 2- and 3-letter ones.
