Hello DMG members,

Wondering if anybody is able/willing to provide me some links to the best/most comprehensive review articles (open access preferable) on the origins/evolution of the avian syrinx?

More specifically, I am looking for something that goes summarizes current evidence, competing views/hypotheses, major open questions, etc. Ideally a review that also illustrates the main evolutionary sequence of anatomical/morphological transitions would also be helpful (if known); anything that also delves into the genetic piece of the puzzle would be an added bonus.

I've done some googling obviously, but haven't really found what I had in mind. Maybe nothing of the sort (yet) exists, but thought maybe some experts here could point me in the right direction.

My appreciation in advance,
Zach

There have been a number of papers in recent years looking at the evolutionary history of the syrinx and its morphology in specific bird groups, a good example from earlier this year being Longtine et al. (2024). The closest to a broad summary that comes to mind might be Kingsley et al. (2018). In addition, this article by Henry Thomas is a good synthesis of recent (as of 2020) hypotheses about the evolution of vocalization in the avian total group.
