Danged invertebrates are SO inconvenient...!

A revised name and new insights into the Middle Jurassic sauropod trackways from Portugal. A correction of Santos et al. 2009

Vanda F. Santos, José J. Moratalla, Rafael Royo-Torres, Matteo Belvedere, Diego Castanera, Luis M.P. Ceríaco, Pedro Mocho, Marc Merino, Christian A. Meyer, and Lara Sciscio

Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 69 (4), 2024: 587-590 doi:10.4202/app.01167.2024

The Galinha dinosaur tracksite (Portugal) was declared a Natural Monument in 1996 and is currently designated as Ourém/Torres Novas Dinosaur Footprints Natural Monument. This tracksite yields a completely new and unique morphology of sauropod tracks from the Middle Jurassic (Bajocian–Bathonian). This new morphotype was named Polyonyx by Santos et al. (2009). However, recently it has been brought to our attention that this ichnotaxon name “Polyonyx” is preoccupied by the porcellanid decapod Polyonyx Stimpson, 1858 (Crustacea: Decapoda: Anomura: Porcellanidae). The priority is given to the latter and to avoid homonymy, the former is issued the new replacement name Galinhapodus igen. nov., creating the new replacement combination name Galinhapodus gomesi.

Does the principle of priority even apply to ichnofossils? I was under the impression that plants and animals could have homonymous names due to being governed by different codes, is that also the case for ichnofossils?

My understanding based on Bromley (1996) and Bertling et al. (20062022) is that pre-Holocene ichnotaxa are partially subject to the ICZN.

The principles of homonymy and priority do apply to ichnofossils (and historically named modern ichnotaxa), which are governed under the ICZN. I can think of at least two more ichnotaxa that are preoccupied.

My understanding is that one evening, a bunch of people got together for a few beers and decided on how to make things as complicated and cumbersome as possible with regards to naming species.

🤣

😬

Any evidence to the contrary?

Does anyone know how to get the actual mail with the papers? For some reason I’m only getting the comments on papers and would rather only have the the paper mail than the discussions.

I think I did something wrong in signing up for the dinosaur mail group, how do I make it so I’m only getting the new papers that get published and not the discussion?

There is no such option. It's just a mailing group, and new paper announcements are among the things that get posted here.

The doi or link associated with the initial post should lead you to the original paper. However they are often behind paywalls which the DML/DMG usually cannot help you get around.
