RINCHEN BARSBOLD
(1935-2025)
To: Members of the Paleontological Community
It is with profound sorrow that the Institute of Paleontology, Mongolian Academy of Sciences, announces the passing of Dr. Rinchen Barsbold on August 28, 2025.
Dr. Barsbold was the founder and foremost leader of modern paleontology in Mongolia. Over the course of several decades, he devoted his life to the study of vertebrate paleontology, most notably theropod dinosaurs, and became internationally recognized for his pioneering research.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to vertebrate paleontology, Dr. Barsbold was awarded the prestigious Romer-Simpson Medal by the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, the highest honor bestowed by the society.
In addition to his scientific contributions, Dr. Barsbold played an essential role in establishing and sustaining Mongolian paleontology. Following the withdrawal of Soviet support in the early 1990s, he initiated and led a wide range of international collaborations with colleagues from Russia, Poland, the United States, Canada, Japan, China, Korea, and other countries. His efforts ensured that Mongolian paleontology continued to thrive during a time of national difficulty.
Equally important was Dr. Barsbold’s dedication to training younger generations of Mongolian paleontologists. Through his mentorship, he inspired and educated a new cohort of researchers who continue to advance the field. By cultivating these young scientists, he firmly established Mongolia as one of the world’s leading countries in dinosaur research.
Dr. Barsbold’s legacy will be remembered not only through his numerous scientific achievements but also through the generations of paleontologists he trained and inspired. His vision and leadership elevated Mongolian paleontology onto the world stage and established the foundation for its continuing success.
We mourn the loss of a giant in paleontology and extend our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and all who were touched by his life and work.
Institute of Paleontology,
Mongolian Academy of Sciences
