If people have not heard this very sad news, Hans-Dieter Sues, the Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and an expert on Triassic tetrapods, has died unexpectedly at age 70. I don't have more details for now. This is a great loss in so many ways.

The news this morning was devastating. It sounds like it took everyone by surprise (including those closest to him). I was fortunate to interact with him a few times at the Smithsonian and SVP. He left an indelible mark on vert paleo.

I knew Hans from way, way back. He ended up at the Smithsonian. So did Mike Brett-Surman. Latter's dad flew Spitfires in WW2. Han's father Me-109s. Doubtful they ever met.

A real blow to the community.

Very unfortunate news to wake up to. Condolences to his friends and family, and all those who had the opportunity to work with him. A big loss. 🙁
