Dear Southwest Alaska Gardeners
:
Long time, no speak. Where has the summer gone?? Hope you all had a safe and enjoyable summer. How did your garden grow? Please share your success stories with everyone...did you start a garden for the first time? Did you get a bumper crop that you want to brag about? Any new gardening tips you want to share?
Every year my garden seems to expand...can't help myself. Extra raised garden bed here; new perennial bed there...and now I am the proud mama of 8 chickens! They eat my old garden vegetable scraps and they give me beautiful eggs in return...I think that's quite a deal!
I am excited to announce there will be another
Southwest Alaska Gardening Symposium
this fall!
See attached event brochure with all the details. This year's symposium will focus on canning, preserving and cooking your home-grown vegetables; improving your garden soil; composting; garden tours, sick plant clinic (bring in your sick plant or a digital photo for a diagnosis); and the popular Garden Contest (bring in your best home-grown Veggie, Fruit, Flower or Family Gardening photo to win a prize!-only fresh entries or printed photo images will be accepted). Class is Thurs, 15Sep 1-6pm; Fri, 16Sep 9-5; Sat, 17Sep 9-4. $75 Tuition & earn 1 college credit. TANF clients are fully funded and are to register through their TANF Manager. Limited travel funding is available for other students. Register now! Call Bristol Bay Campus at 852-5109 or 1-800-748-5109.
If you cannot commit to attending all 3 days, you may be interested in the Garden Bus Tour on the Saturday, 17Sep 10:30am-3pm. You must register in advance at Bristol Bay Campus. There is a $15 registration fee which includes bag lunch and bus transportation. See attached poster for details.
Don't forget that Izetta manages a Southwest Alaska Gardening googlesite where you can find out about gardening activities in the region at:
