Hello Everyone,
Many of you have probably heard that the city council voted down a proposal by Tim Sands to begin recruiting members of a Parks and Rec Commission.  This motion was made in the Council comments part of the meeting after hearing a report from the city manager at the beginning of the meeting which stated that the formation of the committee would have little impact on city finances and staff.  Tim was the only person voting for the motion.  It sounds like the opposition was most concerned with starting a program that may cost the city more money in the future.  Unfortunately it seems that the intrinsic value to the community of a program of recreational activities was lost on the majority of the council.  I suggest that we each question the members of the council on their positions on this issue and keep the pressure on.  Let us know if you find out more info.

I also feel like we need to regroup and strategize our next step.  I have heard suggestions including partnering with the cigarette tax folks to create a fundraising stream for the Commission, to coming out in numbers to one of the next council meetings (6/2 or 6/16) to urge them to reconsider, to striking out on our own and forming a non-profit.  What do you think?

Can folks meet next Wednesday at 5:30pm?

Patrick SW
