Hello Rinpoche,
I believe you explained this morning that people pass through four
phases of awareness on their way to the truth: invalid forms of
awareness (where presumably the person doesn't realize their view is
incorrect), doubt (where the person starts to realize their view might
not be correct), assumption (where the person has a belief which
accords with the truth but the person doesn't yet have direct
perception of the truth), and valid awareness (where the person has
direct understanding of the truth). I would like to know if I have
summarized this correctly, because a light bulb went off in my head
when you explained this. It struck me that in the two phases where
the person is most certain in their belief, they are either way off
base (invalid), or very close to the truth (assumption). So it would
seem that we have to be very careful, whenever we are confident of our
opinion, to realize that we could be quite right, but we could also be
very wrong and simply haven't progressed to the "doubt" stage yet. I
wonder how we can tell the difference? I would be interested to hear
your thoughts on this (if what I say makes any sense ;o)
Regards,
Sara
