Hello All

This list has been pretty quiet of late. This is the group set up to aid communication between makers at the Mini Maker Faire. It is open to anyone but having had a look at the membership it is mostly folks who are going to be attending.

Don't forget that we have essentiall 2 events -

1. 2nd June Saturday:

This will be the arriving and setting up day. At previous events we've noticed that there is little or no time for the makers to visit with each other, collaborate or enjoy the event before the public arrives and takes up all the Maker's time and attention. So we'll be making the Saturday the Maker's Day. There will be a charity Duck Race (unrelated event) on Cathedral Green that day. We've the Maker Tim Hunkin coming to do a talk about his excellent Under the Pier Show and a walk about with Q&A we've Andy Harlsey from Dragon's Den coming too (he made the RapStrap) as he's a long association with Nottinghack and a recent one with the Silk Mill Museum.

There will be behind the scenes tours of the Silk Mill Museum as well. The museum is mothballed and not currently open to the public... How cool is that, like something from Scooby Do! There will be a social in the evening for the Makers (the nature of which is still being sorted but it'll be in the Silk Mill itself).

2. 3rd June Sunday

This will be the Public Event where we'll be meeting and greeting the public this event is about the Makers relating to the public and we'd discourage inward Maker only collaboration on this day. Ideally we'd like Maker's to actively engage with the public.... That's the idea anyway.

There will be a number of Makers who can't make it until the day itself. There will be a soldering and making area FOR THE PUBLIC near the back of the Faire which will be very close to the area dedicated to the Hackerspaces that are visiting.

I'd like you to use this thread to discuss and co-ordinate the Hackerspaces area. At this time I am uncertain where the London Hackspace Golf will be located it may not be in the Hackspaces area. The same is true of some of the larger "toys" belonging to HACMan placement planning is still fluid and may only be determined on the day in collaboration.

Please discuss I'll try and take any Silk Mill related actions or answer any questions I can.

Dominic

To get the ball rolling here's some of things Nottignham Hackspace is hoping to bring along and show off.

RepRap's
We have two fully built that will be on display both days and on the Sunday we will be building a 3rd that is made form parts printed on the other 2 machines!

CNC Mill
Looks like we are bringing the mill from the Hackspace, hopefully it will be cutting a few bits during the weekend and there will be examples of work produced by members

Lighting Automation Project
By the end of the summer we hope to have all the lighting at Nottingham Hackspace under arduino control. For the weekend we will be bringing one of the mains<>arduino control centres, a prototype of a capacitive touch switch panel and some smaller wireless switches.

Soldering kits
We have a bunch of different kits that will be on show/sale.

We hope to add a bunch more to this list by the end of the week and will be intrested in working with the other makers and hackapces to come up with some mad on the spot hack's like we have done in the past at Newcastle and Brighton.

For the most part, my area will remain as originally stated, a table to show off projects, then an area to the side to put up the giant Instructables robot.

In terms of 'Maker Talks' is their any call for anyone else to do a talk if they feel it is suitable? Obviously if you say yes, there could be a whole host of people wanting to do a talk.

We could do a impromptu show n' tell perhaps!? We could slot this in after Tim Hunkin's talk. Anyone particularly interested in doing one? We'd need to limit the time slots I'd think.

Hacman are bringing the project-a-sketch, a knock clock, some little robots, an LED sign, our lifesize operation game, and maybe a hexapod.

Plus whatever else gets lobbed in the back of the van on saturday morning!

Well, I was thinking less a standing up and talking about ones project, more a talk that relates to some maker discussion.

For example, I could see myself doing a talk on 'To inspire, and to be inspired' which would basically be talking about maker interaction and how creativity breeds creativity, how education in the maker scene is important, for makers of any age.

Or, someone might do a talk on how they made their project their career. I felt that talks at the Newcastle Maker faires were missed by many makers due to being on their tables.

Obviously with a Maker only day, there is the option to have time slot for talks that are relevant to makers, and the makers can easily attend. Perhaps after Tim Hunkin's talk, keep them in a block. Its probably a bit late in the day to suggest the idea. It only crossed my mind when you were talking to Andy at the weekend.

Regards,

Jake

I'd say we can keep that idea for next year as you suggest! Any thought to do a show and tell will go in a different thread as this one is Hackspaces.

On topic...

It's quite likely we'll need to spread the larger items (like HACman's) about the museum a bit. What time might you arrive on Saturday Bob was thinking you'd come on Friday night TBH! Mind you we can't get into Silk Mill till Saturday.

Hello

Bristol shall be bringing a Twittering BBC B/Raspberry Pi combo, probably a ChipKIT based pong game and maybe some musical bicycle wheels.

I reckon this is going to be a fun weekend.

We're aiming for midday-ish, buildup of our stall only takes around an hour assuming everything works.

Or 35 minutes if you have a panicking Pountney rushing you to complete before the midnight deadline ;)

The Brighton hackspace contingent should be arriving there about 1pm-ish. I don't think our stand will take long to set up, so will be about to help put up the bunting we're bringing.

*mutter mutter*

Thankfully nothing we're showing this year is *quite* as stupid setup-wise as the H2audiO!

So, I'm getting to Derby station at 9:34am. Will anyone be at the Silk Mill at that time? Do I have to sit outside with the Ducks?

I expect various parts of the nottinghack contingent to arrive between 9 and 10 if we can get in that early.

The late commers will have to fight over whatever space we haven't all ready taken over ;)

The maker faire details said we would only be able to get in from 11am.
I will be aiming to get there as soon as possible and it's quite quick to set up the laser cutter so we'll be able to start hacking asap.

There will be staff at the Silk Mill Museum from about 9am on the Saturday. The Tim Hunkin talk will be at 14:00 and we'd like a general tools down for that.

Attached is the floor plan. We've arranged for the Soldering area to be in the Power Gallery G14 this will also have some crafter folk ( working on peg dolls. In the area marked Workshops G15 there will be a pedal power workshop going on all day Saturday and Sunday this isn't strictly part of the faire as the participants are paying to be taught how to make pedal power generators.

The HACKSPACE area will be G12. There is going to need to be some negotiation on the day as we need to get the London Hackspace golf, HACMan's Big Toys. As well as tables for Nottinghack, Build Brighton, Bristol Hackspace, London Hackspace, HACMan, Derby Makers and possibly Northackton. In addition to the tables needed by Hackman for their life size operation game there should be about 7/8  Spencer and Ciseco will be at the back of G12 with the Hackspaces area.

We've placed other Hackspace related people such as Instructables, John from Bristol Hackspace, Museum of Computing, Anne from Derby Makers and various others about the rest of the museum.

Did I cover everything?
