Dear Makers

I'd like to get a feel from you regarding a change of date for this
Mini Maker Faire. We had planned to run the Mini Maker Faire on
Saturday 2nd June 2012 with a Makers Only day on the Sunday 3rd.

We now find that our planned date clashes with an event (duck race) on
Cathedral Green (immediately outside the Silk Mill Museum our venue).
Our options are as follows:

1. Run the Maker Faire on Sunday 3rd June 2012 (with a Makers Only
event and setup on Saturday)
2. Run on a Saturday but on a different weekend (likely 9th June 2012)

We'd welcome comments thoughts and timely feedback. We will be putting
out the "Call to Makers" this week!

Please do email me directly (notti...@gmail.com) if you'd like to
answer off list.

Regards

Dominic Morrow

Not familiar with the duck race, happened to be in derby last weekend, looking at the area around the cathedral, surely such an event would do nothing but help promote the Maker Faire?

They both sound like family events, and therefore having large enough signs outside the silk mill would easily draw more people in?

Is it worth contacting the people doing the duck race, see if they like the idea of a shared event day?

Just a few thoughts.

The Setup Saturday / Show Sunday seems like the most sensible option to me, though i can see a lot of incredibly hungover makers on the sunday morning!

What's the problem with running the two events on the same day? If some people meander from one event to the other then surely it's good for both events?
Are there parking issues? or general space issues I'm not aware of?

Hi there,

We've been in touch with the duck race guys and it feels like the aims
for the 2 events might clash more than blend as they are aiming to do
a lot of family activities, which may well cause confusion between the
2 events.

In terms of the 9th of June, unfortunately that date isn't available
Dominic! The next available weekend would be the 16th/17th of June.

Cheers,

Would there be a massive issue with moving either event completely? Has there already been a load of advertisement for either of them?

I'd be much more in favour of a complete mo to keep the maker say after the faire.

this sounds like a sensible compromise. much like how most 'trade' shows are run. ie public days last. it would also give people time to tune/tinker their stands/showy bits.

even enable time for some collaboration (see BMMF and twitter drummer(hacman)+guitar hero drums(LHS))

I would be keen to keep the public day on the Saturday and the maker day on the Sunday, even if that means doing it on a different day.

We get time to socialise on Saturday night and time to put any ideas into action the following day.
People who travel a long way to the faire get to meander home whenever they feel like it on Sunday.
Attendees get pulled together as a team in the midst of the public onslaught so Sunday will be friendlier tinkering time :)

I vote for keeping the format the same, but having it on a later weekend, would give us a little extra breathing room for organisation as well.

I am happy to try and help out with the organisation side some more, my wife works in derby so coming over for a day to help organise is very easy for me.

Anything that will help things progress nicely, and on time.

I much prefer the idea of Saturday public/Sunday private but May &
June are looking very busy for me now; I can't come on the 16th, for
example.

Don't forget sat 2nd sun 3rd and Monday 4th june is a bank holiday weekend!

Moving or sharing with the duck race event is outside of the scope of the organisers of the Mini Maker Faire.

I'll comeback with an update later.

If it's a bank holiday and people have that many days off in a row, I'd keep it there. Any scope for shuffling things Sat/Sun/Mon?

So we could easily have the actual faire on the sunday, then perhaps the makers day on the monday? Is that the kinda of thing you were thinking David?

That sounds like quite a good compromise, well noticed about the additional bank holiday.

Would it be possible to have Maker days saturday and monday, and the public faire on the sunday then? ^_^

Yeah, if Monday is an option then public Sunday/maker Monday would be
fine for me, I'd just prefer not to have the public day last.

It would be good to make the most of the long weekend with this is my thinking, so this gets my vote.

It means there will be more time to be able to enjoy the event even when helping out.

We would be travelling from the Thames Valley (Dominic's query about
people travelling from further afield).

I don't have a strong preference for one of the dates mentioned over
another. I do think that using the very long weekend of the Queens
Jublilee is a good opportunity to capture the attention of people who
might not have much else to do unless they are strong monarchists. Are
there any other big events locally on the Saturday/Sunday?

My other question is what it local accommodation situation likely to
belike? If all else fails we can doss at my parents in Sheffield and
travel but it reduces opportunities to socialise and if there is a
bigger contingent from the Reading Hackspace that travels, there won't
be enough room at my folks. If one of the times will be better from an
accomodation point of view that might influence people who are
travelling to exhibit and need to stay overnight.

Malcolm

Accommodation costs are likely to be higher over a bank holiday, and from a purely selfish standpoint, I will probably be at a jubilee party on the Monday!

TBH Malcolm I've not looked at accommodation yet. Once we've put out a call to makers we'll make some suggestions. However the Faire organisers (me included) will probably take a hands off approach encouraging the makers to use this forum to share information etc.

It might be worth Hackerspaces mentioning accommodation to Nottingham Hackspace on their google group as a number of Nottingham & Derby based makers will have both spare rooms, recommendations and suggestions.

There *might* be the opportunity to Hack through the night at Nottinghack (20 miles away) but you'd need to ask on the google group.

Also from the perspective of someone coming from further afield
(Brighton) - I'd say Saturday (plus optional Sunday) is more
convenient. It gives you the rest of the 4 day weekend to do something
else.

My experience from BMMF is that the more going on in town the better.
I don't know how big a deal this duck race is(!) but I'd have thought
it would work to attract more people into town and give you more
passing trade...

I'm really sorry but we can not run the Faire at the same time as the duck race. Not because of the size of the event but because it's a different event run in the same area and there is no scope for sharing that area.

Current planning is to run Maker Faire on Sunday 3rd with a setup/maker only day on Saturday 2nd. This is to take advantage of the school half term and the extra bank holiday!

More news later. We're just putting the finishing touches to the call to makers.

public destroy whats been made would be great :)

You know were bringing a Portal minigolf course with us this year
