Stanford University scientist John Ioannidis has declared in study after study that the coronavirus is not that big of a threat, emboldening opponents of economic shutdowns — and infuriating critics who see fundamental errors in his work.
He is another Whore of Trump!
But even before the epidemiologist had any of that data in hand, he and an elite group of scientists tried to convince President Donald Trump that locking down the country would be the real danger.
In late March, as COVID-19 cases overran hospitals overseas, Ioannidis tried to organize a meeting at the White House where he and a small band of colleagues would caution the president against “shutting down the country for [a] very long time and jeopardizing so many lives in doing this,” according to a statement Ioannidis submitted on the group’s behalf. Their goal, the statement said, was “to both save more lives and avoid serious damage to the US economy using the most reliable data.”
The meeting did not take place, and Ioannidis did not get the NIH job, but that is still good enough for Newhouse.
He presents the usual Zalman Bernstein garbage, denying science:
Before the pandemic, the sharing of data, protocols, and discoveries for free was limited, compromising the communalism on which the scientific method is based. It was already widely tolerated that science was not universal, but the realm of an ever-more hierarchical elite, a minority of experts. Gargantuan financial and other interests and conflicts thrived in the neighborhood of science—and the norm of disinterestedness was left forlorn.

The hottest public scientific debate of the moment—whether the COVID-19 virus was the product of natural evolution or a laboratory accident—could have been settled easily with a minimal demonstration of communalism (“communism,” actually, in the original Merton vocabulary) from China: Opening the lab books of the Wuhan Institute of Virology would have alleviated concerns immediately. Without such openness about which experiments were done, lab leak theories remain tantalizingly credible.

At first sight, this was an unprecedented mobilization of interdisciplinary talent. However, most of this work was of low quality, often wrong, and sometimes highly misleading. Many people without subject-matter technical expertise became experts overnight, emphatically saving the world. As these spurious experts multiplied, evidence-based approaches—like randomized trials and collection of more accurate, unbiased data—were frequently dismissed as inappropriate, too slow, and harmful. The disdain for reliable study designs was even celebrated.

Social and mainstream media have helped to manufacture this new breed of experts. Anyone who was not an epidemiologist or health policy specialist could suddenly be cited as an epidemiologist or health policy specialist by reporters who often knew little about those fields but knew immediately which opinions were true. Conversely, some of the best epidemiologists and health policy specialists in America were smeared as clueless and dangerous by people who believed themselves fit to summarily arbitrate differences of scientific opinion without understanding the methodology or data at issue.
It is a veritable Whore of Trump Greatest Hits.

“We’ve been patient. But our patience is wearing thin,” President Biden warned
Thursday night, in a speech blaming unvaccinated Americans for the spike in
COVID-19 cases and announcing sweeping new vaccine mandates. The White House
“action plan” requires private companies with more than 100 employees, a group
the Associated Press estimates tops 80 million people, to require workers to
get vaccines. Approximately 17 million additional healthcare workers at
facilities that receive federal aid will also have to get vaccinated. Organized
opposition to the plan, which is being enacted without any substantial
legislative oversight, has so far come from Republican elected officials and
some labor union leaders.
One issue with the new White House approach is raised by Dr. Aaron Kheriaty, a
professor of psychiatry and human behavior at the University of California,
Irvine, who heads up the school’s medical ethics program. Kheriaty, who has
already had COVID-19, points out that current vaccine mandates make no
exceptions for people like himself despite evidence showing that natural
immunity “is as good, indeed, very likely better, than that conferred by the
vaccine.” The second issue is that countries with some of the highest
vaccination rates in the world, such as Israel and Mongolia, have also recently
had the highest numbers of COVID-19 cases, suggesting that vaccines alone will
not entirely eliminate the spread of the disease. Perhaps the strongest
argument for government vaccine mandates is that it’s the fastest way to get
the country back to normal and revive the economy for working people. But that
assumes that the mandates are able and intended to end the pandemic. Well over
a year after the public campaigns insisting that lockdowns and other emergency
measures were needed to “stop the spread” and “flatten the curve,” the
persistence of the “emergency war powers” approach to COVID-19 suggests that
the end of the disease will be measured by political rather than health
outcomes.

President Biden’s new vaccine policy could be dangerous disinformation that requires Twitter, YouTube, and other online platforms to ban him and censor coverage of his proposals. YouTube, the digital video streaming service owned by Google, states clearly in its “COVID-19 medical misinformation policy” that it doesn’t allow content that contradicts “the World Health Organization’s (WHO) medical information about COVID-19.” But the WHO has publicly opposed vaccine mandates. Last December, at a time when President Biden and Dr. Anthony Fauci were both still on record opposing mandatory vaccinations, and mainstream news outlets were reporting that mandates would be illegal and impossible, the director of the WHO’s immunization department told reporters, “I don’t think that mandates are the direction to go in here, especially for these vaccines.” More recently the WHO has called for halting vaccine boosters, another recommendation that the White House has violated, which could also qualify as disinformation.
