I'm starting to notice a trend with travelling. The first day or two usually suck as you figure out who's scamming you and who's not. Then everything gets better somehow. Today's biggest acheivement was getting a cell phone to work and logging onto the internet at a coffee shop. Woohoo!! So now I'm figuring out the geography of the city and 10th person I pass on the street wants to sell me a safari package and every 5th person wants me to use their taxi. I think the next I see somebody trying to start up conversation with me I'll whip out one of my safari brochures and try to sell them one.
Two young teens followed me around this morning when I left my hotel, and as I wondered through the streets they told me they were starving and begged me to buy them tea. ... yes tea. Kids are "starving" and the first thing on their mind is tea? Ahh, the travesties of British imperialism. =)
Btw, if somebody starts following you around the city and starts explaining every building in site, they are going to expect money from you later on, whether you wanted them to follow you or not.
Other than that, Nairobi seems like every other third world metropolis I've visited, except it's unusually chilly for an equatorial country.
