Responsible Charity: A Practical Guide to Making a Real Difference
Charity is more than giving money. It is an act of kindness combined with global thinking. It reflects a belief that we are all connected, and that the well-being of others matters just as much as our own.
Across the world, millions of families live below the poverty line. Some struggle to afford food. Others cannot access education, healthcare, or basic shelter. In such a world, charity becomes not just an option—but a responsibility for those who are able to help.
But how we give is just as important as how much we give.
Understanding Different Levels of Giving
People give according to their capacity. Not everyone has the same financial strength, yet everyone can contribute in some way.
1. The Limited Contributor
Some individuals earn modest incomes. They may only be able to offer small amounts to street beggars or donate occasionally. Their intention is good—they genuinely believe they are helping.
And kindness, in any amount, always has value.
However, small giving without thought may not always create long-term change. It can provide temporary relief, but not lasting improvement.
2. The Responsible Giver
A more thoughtful approach to charity involves effort and investigation. Responsible contributors:
- Identify widows who need support

- Check within extended families for those silently struggling
- Support neighbors facing temporary hardship
This type of charity is intentional. It does not rely on visibility; it searches for hidden need. Many families do not beg publicly, yet they suffer quietly.
If you are practicing charity in this manner, you are already contributing at a meaningful level.
3. The Empowerment-Oriented Philanthropist
Those who can afford to give more have an opportunity to move from relief to empowerment.
Instead of donating all funds to large organizations without understanding impact, consider exploring needs within your local community. Look for individuals who:
- Are hardworking but temporarily unemployed
- Have skills but lack small capital
- Want to improve their situation but need a starting point
The goal should not be to create dependency. The goal should be to restore dignity.
For example:
- Buying a small food cart so someone can sell snacks
- Financing a rickshaw so a person can earn daily income
- Providing basic stock (such as bottled water or small goods) and guiding someone to sell and earn
Al-Mu’jam al-Awsaṭ lil-Ṭabarānī # 6026
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : «أَحَبُّ النَّاسِ إِلَى اللهِ أَنْفَعُهُمْ لِلنَّاسِ ، وَأَحَبُّ الأَعْمَالِ إِلَى اللهِ سُرُورٌ تُدْخِلُهُ عَلَى مُسْلِمٍ أَوْ تَكْشِفُ عَنْهُ كُرْبَةً أَوْ تَقْضِي عَنْهُ دِينًا أَوْ تَطْرُدُ عَنْهُ جُوعًا ، وَلَأَنْ أَمْشِيَ مَعَ أَخٍ لِي فِي حَاجَةٍ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أَعْتَكِفَ فِي هَذَا الْمَسْجِدِ يَعْنِي مَسْجِدَ الْمَدِينَةِ شَهْرًا ، وَمَنْ كَفَّ غَضَبَهُ سَتَرَ اللهُ عَوْرَتَهُ ، وَمَنْ كَظَمَ غَيْظَهُ وَلَوْ شَاءَ أَنْ يُمْضِيَهُ أَمْضَاهُ مَلأَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قَلْبَهُ أَمْنًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ، وَمَنْ مَشَى مَعَ أَخِيهِ فِي حَاجَةٍ حَتَّى أَثْبَتَهَا لَهُ أَثْبَتَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قَدَمَهُ عَلَى الصِّرَاطِ يَوْمَ تَزِلُّ فِيهِ الأَقْدَامُ» .
Ibn Umarؓ reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The most beloved people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to people. The most beloved deed to Allah is to make a Muslim happy, or remove one of his troubles, or forgive his debt, or feed his hunger. That I walk with a brother regarding a need is more beloved to me than that I seclude myself (in i'itkiaf) in this mosque in Madina for a month. Whoever swallows his anger, then Allah will conceal his faults. Whoever suppresses his rage, even though he could fulfill his anger if he wished, then Allah will secure his heart on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever walks with his brother regarding a need until he secures it for him, then Allah Almighty will make his footing firm across the siraat (bridge) on the day when the footings are shaken.”
حضرت عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: "لوگوں میں سب سے زیادہ محبوب اللہ کے ہاں وہ شخص ہے جو لوگوں کو سب سے زیادہ نفع دینے والا ہے۔ اور اللہ کو سب سے زیادہ پسندیدہ عمل وہ خوشی ہے جو مسلمان کسی دوسرے مسلمان کو دے، یا اس سے مصیبت دور کرے ،یا اس کا قرض ادا کرے یا اس کی بھوک ختم کرے۔ اور اگر میں کسی بھائی کے ساتھ اس کی ضرورت پوری کرنے کے لئے چلوں تو یہ مجھے اس مسجد (یعنی مسجد نبوی) میں ایک ماہ اعتکاف میں بیٹھنے سے زیادہ محبوب ہے۔ جس شخص نے اپنا غصہ روکا اللہ تعالیٰ اس کے عیوب پر پردہ ڈال دے گا۔ جو شخص اپنے غصے کے مطابق عمل کرنے کی طاقت کے باوجود اپنے غصے کو پی گیا، اللہ تعالیٰ قیامت کے دن اس کے دل کو امید سے بھر دے گا۔ اور جو شخص اپنے بھائی کے ساتھ اس کی ضرورت پوری ہونے تک اس کے ساتھ چلا تو اللہ تعالیٰ اسے اس دن (پُل) صراط پر ثابت قدم رکھیں گے جس دن قدم ڈگمگا رہے ہوں گے۔"
_*(آپ ﷺ کی ان تعلیمات پر ہمیشہ ہی عمل کرنا چاہئے، اور رمضان المبارک میں خاص طور پر خوش اخلاقی، عفو و درگزر، اور ضرورتمندوں کی مدد پر توجہ دینا چاہئے۔ جو عمل ہمارے نبی کریم ﷺ کو اعتکاف جیسی بڑی عبادت سے بھی زیادہ پسند تھا، اسے ہمارا بھی پسندیدہ عمل ہونا چاہئے۔ اللہﷻ ہمیں لالچ اور خود غرضی جیسی برائیوں سے توبہ کرنے اور اپنے محبوب ﷺ کی ان تعلیمات کو اپنے خاندان اور اپنے معاشرے میں دوبارہ نافذ کرنے کی توفیق عطا فرمائے۔ آمین)
