Skull Found On Top Of Grave In Cemetery

Posted: 4:42 pm EDT March 17, 2009Updated: 6:08 pm EDT March 17, 2009

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. -- A human skull was found Tuesday in a Volusia County cemetery, but not underground. The skull was found in the Pinewood Cemetery in Daytona Beach and police were trying to figure out where the skull came from. They expected to find something disturbed, but they didn't. No open graves and no vandalism. Officers said it wasn't hidden in the back corner of the property; it was close enough to reach out and touch.A man who got off a bus saw the skull lying upside down on top of a grave, A somewhat shocking site for anyone who walked by and saw it."Well, I thought it was a dead skull. Was it really a human?" said nearby resident Calvin Williams. It was unquestionably human police said. They blocked off the cemetery so they could walk the grounds to look for other bones.Police searched three times, but found nothing. They also said there were no signs of digging or disturbed graves that usually go along with that kind of a discovery."I want to see a cemetery, but I really don't want to see bones above the ground," said tourist Julie Pinckney. The cemetery is historic, so people visit the site often, making it even odder that the skull suddenly appeared."Well we just had bike week you would think somebody would've noticed it. If it's been there, a skull, you know it's been there for awhile," said tourist Rachel Silvia. There were some animal tracks nearby, but no signs of digging.WFTV talked to a woman who does tours at the cemetery regularly and said the skull was not there at 9:30 Monday night.

Is death the last sleep? No--it is the last and final awakening.

Rusty,
Right where that corner marker is that you photographed, is where the skull was found.
Back in 1974 a group of teens broke into Dr. Adler Scon Rawling's mausoleum and stole his skull. Oddly enough one of the teens questioned at the time called me after the story broke talking about how the police can't get finger prints off of skulls that old. How would he know how old the skull is? That information was never released.
They did keep Dr. Rawlings remains at the ME office and hopefully we'll find out that it IS his skull so he can finally rest in peace.
