PAL question

Hi all.  I have a show coming in for a German broadcaster.  

Their spec sheet is calling for 1080i/25.

I guess i always assumed 25 was always progressive, but i do see Avid will do 1080i/50.

This brought up the question with the editor...do they want dropframe?

I don't think drop frame exists outside of 29.97...is that true?

Is there such a thing as 25 fps drop frame?

If the need 1080i – just the container flagged as interlaced ?

Because we do a lot of shows progressive and tag it interlaced because their system needs it.

Or we just do an interlaced credit roll for some tv stations because world sales are progressive only.

Drop frame is only at 29,97 or 59,94. You are right. Usually is reported as 1080i@50. I think was a type mistake. Normally we have 50 fields per second, that is 25 frames.

Sorry, I think that you haven't well understood difference between progressive and interlaced. Please let's revise difference in acquisition and all things will be clear

I've found some use 1080i25 and 1080i50 interchangeably, it's either referencing 25 interlaced frames a second or 50 interlaced fields a second. Amounts to the same thing.

No drop frame in pal.

Correct. I've seen both used interchangeably for years.

And afaik there are no standardised interlaced formats beyond 50i or 59.94i, everything is progressive beyond that point.

One of DS's strengths was it's ability to choose field options on the fly. As @Paul Ingvarsson can attest, we used to regularly online: progressively acquired shows, with interlaced credit rolls as per the broadcasters specs. We struggled to do that after DS because other systems forced graphics rendering to match the timeline format.

Yeah, I really miss this on Avid, working at the moment on a 50i (sports)/25p(interviews) mixed rate programme going out as 50i.

DS was great that you could tag a clip as progressive for rendering in an interlaced sequence.
