Many of you know we have had some difficulty with network connectivity
and the library's computer since we had a line run down to the library
in May. I've tried everything short of tossing the stupid thing out
the window. In four months of tinkering, I've isolated the problem
specifically to the way the computer is interfacing with the church's
network and likely an issue that needs to be addressed on the network
side. If you want more details I'm happy to provide, but don't want
to bore anyone.
On Rex's advice, I have contacted Don Kendrick to help me look at the
church's network. If any of you have suggestions of people in the
church with networking experience that I may contact, please voice
them here. I've already been in conversation with Peter Kinnaird, who
admits he's not a networking expert but would be happy to give it a
look after his honeymoon.

It was amazing how much work I was able to do this morning without
having to think about taking things home to work on. We'll be working
on setting up a guest account soon with restricted access. I'll
probably just set up a firewall with a list of accepted domains and
anyone who tries to surf outside of those domains will be blocked. Dan
wants to set up a wireless router to turn the library into a hotspot.
We'll have to look into extending some sort of firewall or parental
filter for that as well. From what I hear from Rick and what I've seen
of the network, our network does not currently have any firewalls or
filters set up on any of the computers (including the one in the
volunteer office). I know this may be a source of concern for some,
especially parents of teenagers, so if you or anyone you know has
questions or concerns please let me know and we'll see what we can do.
In the meantime, we can catalog at top speed and offer access to the
catalog in the library! :-)
