[DHU] URGENT/SHORT DEADLINE: Please tell Sen. Tokuda that you want a woman on the UH Board of Regents!

NOTE:  Your action is needed THIS WEEKEND, because the Senate Higher Education Committee is meeting this Monday afternoon to consider whether to confirm the next student representative on the UH Board of Regents!

   I hope that you have seen the articles in the newspapers in which people from the UH Commission on the Status of Women, the Hawaii Democratic Women's Caucus, the UH-Manoa Student Equity, Excellence & Diversity office, and Sen. Jill Tokuda have complained about Gov. Lingle's refusal to appoint women to the UH Board of Regents, including the student representative to the Board of Regents:

  I was a finalist for the student position on the Board of Regents.  However, Gov. Lingle chose a white male graduate student instead for this two year (2010-12) term.  More importantly, she chose a much less qualified candidate, someone with much less education, NO financial or business experience, and NO comparable experience in advocacy, communications, or organizing.  He may even be a conservative and/or a personal friend, someone adverse to student interests. 

 

   If Sen. Jill Tokuda, who has already expressed concern over Lingle's nominee and chairs the Senate Higher Education committee, can inform her fellow committee members that students, faculty, and members of the public are opposed to confirmation, we can probably avoid having such an inadequate person representing us. 

 

  Please contact Sen. Jill Tokuda and other committee members this weekend or Monday morning (e-mail is probably best), and ask her to not confirm Matt Williams to the board of regents.  Also, Brian Taniguchi, another committee member, probably represents you if you live near UH.  Here is their contact information:
