Hi Everyone,
The sit-in started by Save Our Schools is now in its sixth day.
Today, Monday, April 12, was the original deadline for the HSTA, DOE and Lingle to come up with a plan to eliminate Furlough Fridays. It looks like we are still waiting, and the Legislature, which has released the money, is pushing back the deadline so that the parties can all come to agreement.
As you may know, Governor Lingle responded to the sit-in and SOS's demands that she find a solution to the problem in a letter that has been published in the Honolulu Advertiser, which essentially demonstrates her lack of commitment to the government funding of public education.
Save Our Schools is holding a press conference this afternoon at 4 pm to respond to her letter constructively. It is being held at the Governor's office at the 5th floor of the Capitol Building. Please attend to show your support if you can.
We are also committed to our goals of eliminating furlough Fridays, and to staying in the People's Office at the Capitol. However, we need your help to keep this movement growing. We have received an overwhelmingly positive response, but social actions such as this one appreciates and needs fresh faces and commitment to keep going. Please email me if you are interested in participating.
Thank you,
Vernadette Gonzalez

Aloha Everyone!
I just wanted to remind all of you that GSO voting has begun for next years executive council.  I know that you may not think that this concerns you, but we do represent you on this campus.
A few of us have been putting together a like minded group to run this time around.  We want to be a governing body that truly advocates for the benefit of the grad students instead of simply being a grants and awards distributor (although we will also continue this important job).

So take a moment....please help us!  Go to your myUH, click on the GSO Election tab and vote.  It will take less than a minute!

Our ticket is:
Sharain Naylor: President
Shanna Clinton: Vice President (I know that there is no one running against her but she still needs votes!)

Please take the time to invest in the GSO and we will take it from there.

Thank you for your time!!!!!
Mo Wells
American Studies GSO Representative

PS If you know of any list serves that access graduate students please pass this message along. We need all the help that we can get!!!

FYI:  HERE IS SHARAIN'S PLATFORM:

I earned my M.A. in Political Science in 2007 from the University of Hawaii, Manoa. Currently, I am working toward a PhD in political science. I am also a Graduate Assistant in the political science department and I teach an intro course each semester. I have two years of experience working in the GSO as the political science department representative.

My platform for President of GSO is as follows:

• Represent the graduate student body’s concerns to the Administration and State Legislature
• Maintain and garner robust funding for graduate research through the GSO
• Reinstate lost Graduate Assistantship and lectureship positions in all departments
• Demand the latest cut in lecturer pay be reinstated
• Resist the implementation of a universal rubric system for writing and grading
• Resist any attempt by the Administration to further eviscerate student programs and library services
• Support legislation in Hawaii that allows graduate students the opportunity to unionize at the University of Hawaii

I hope you will give me the opportunity to serve you by voting for me in April.

Thank you for your consideration,

Sharain S Naylor,
Political Science
