If this is the ASUH rally then you better make sure they know what the
hell they're talking about. And that mainly means Mark Ing especially
if they're representing UH!

Lets see how many ways Mark Ing has offended the faculty and student body of UH:

1) His speech at the Teach-In was not only incorrect to say the least. The Teach-In was not staged by faculty alone. The students played a major hand in putting together the rally to support that event. Everything from chalking the sidewalks, distributing flyers, speeches, mobilizing the march to the Teach-In, etc. Quite frankly I can't imagine the UH faculty chalking the sidewalks for hours and days (bygones). ;) Ing's facts in his speech were completely disrespectful and inaccurate. Also, do we really care that Ing went to Kamehameha how many years ago? Nope.

2) By abusing the ASUH office Ing sent a crude and insulting letter to the entire body of UH Manoa. (Read below) I utterly disagree with his statements about our faculty. His minuscule understanding of the events, and of the history of the campus makes me realize that he does not fully comprehend the situation.

Students, faculty, and administration,

In the midst of our budget crisis here at Mânoa, I have been continually encouraging a wave of activism from the student population, community, and all other stakeholders who would want to be a part of a movement to preserve Hawai‘i’s economy and encourage the development of future leaders for our State.  We have proudly risen to the occasion.  But along with an increase in passion, fallen an unfortunate rough divide  between various groups of importance that constitute our university community.

The recent crux of the tension seems to have spawned between administration and faculty as a result of discontentment with the conditions and processes of the university's contract offer to UHPA.  A term of the contract would result in a pay cut of about 5% for many faculty members.

Some students have been especially vocal about this issue.  However, the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii (ASUH), representing over 11,000 full-time undergraduate students at the Mânoa campus, has not taken a stance.

Although ASUH supports our faculty, it urges students to be aware of what the consequences could come from their efforts before taking a side.   Around 500 classes were already dropped and 150 lecturers lost their jobs.  After a UHPA strike in 2001, faculty members received a huge salary increases while students were left to bear the burden of university compensation by taking a similarly scaled tuition increase.

It should also be noted that administrators have told faculty there would be further reductions in both programs and personnel to make up a rejection of its offer.

ASUH recognizes that sizable salary reductions may discourage future competitive hires, which in turn could affect the quality of education for future students.  However, without first knowing what the alternative administrative action would be, students should be advised to carefully evaluate either side of the issue before choosing a stance.

On a more disappointing note, I have been receiving emails and phone calls from both faculty members and administrators attempting to antagonize each other in the eyes of the students—trying to obtain an edge by leaning students to their side.  This needs to stop.

It is rather tactless to perceive students as even able to be exploited to take a side.  Students are the university, and ultimately both entities must act in accordance to student interest in order to remain in existence.  Faculty and administration need to settle this dispute as soon as possible so that progress can be made and students will not have to externally suffer for their bickering.

Students, we must remember that as our own political entity--20,000 strong, powerful and much larger than many professional unions--we must remain autonomous in our decisions. We should support our entire university community and offer diplomatic assistance with all initiatives that move towards a collective goal, but we must refuse to be used as another entity’s pawns.

Our university needs to be saved, and only we, the students, will be able to effectively lead the charge.  This situation shows that the one area where administration, faculty, and students all tend to agree is that student involvement is the most effective vehicle for change for UH.  Administration and faculty are welcome to help us as much as they are willing on this charge, but we must all keep in mind that it is high time to settle our disagreements as promptly as possible and move forward for the students and for the future of Hawai‘i.

Mâlama,

Mark K. Ing
President
Associated Students of the University of Hawai‘i at Mânoa
97th Senate

3) The puff pieces in the university's renowned newspaper Kaleo suggest that Ing has his own agenda. I for one can't wait to see what it is.

I am a complete supporter of this university. I support the faculty and students, but I will not support ASUH and their rally. I believe they have the wrong message, and they will send the wrong message. My chalk and I will stay out of this one time.

Carrie,

I do understand your concerns about Mark Ing. I share many of them,
too. I do believe he is correct in telling the undergraduates to
carefully consider their own interests first. But as you and I
understand, in many ways their interests are our interests. Have you
or any of the grad students who have worked on this directly spoken or
written a response to Ing? I have not. Perhaps we should. We should
tell him or remind him of our participation. More importantly, we
should show up to the rally. We need to show solidarity in this
struggle. We need numbers. If we want our voices to be heard, we
should not just sit back and watch this happen. We need to participate
in this rally. This is this first and only large-scale response that
UH students have attempted targeting the legislature. If we were to
divide ourselves as grad students, we would have such a meager turnout
for such a rally. Despite our differences with this one individual, we
need to do a better job of working together with the larger
undergraduate population. Remember our main goal? --Support public
higher education in Hawaii-- --Support UH Manoa--

This DHU group has fallen silent. That does not mean that everyone has
stopped working on this; however, the momentum has shifted. At this
moment it is the undergraduates who are showing leadership and
initiative. We must support and encourage them, as well as foster a
dialog. We must remind them of our value. We must offer them our
perspective. We must make clear our goals, concerns, and needs. We
cannot do that from the sidelines. We are in a more vulnerable
position than they. We do not have strength in numbers, we have no
union, and we are not faculty.

I support the faculty. I chalked, too. Going to this rally is about
demanding support from the state for UH, Manoa. And if the members of
DHU decide to use our chalk for this event, then whoever wants to
participate will get my help and the chalk we purchased for events
supporting our education at UH, Manoa.

Respectfully,

Sharain S Naylor

Look I do not want to argue about Mark Ing or the rally, so I will answer this message and be done with it. I am not asking anyone not to attend the rally. That is the way I feel, so let me express that opinion. I do know people who communicated with Mark Ing about the student involvement concerning the Teach-In. Ing did attend the informational meeting before the Teach-In where he obviously must have been daydreaming. He missed the entire point. The evidence: his speech and his email.

Logistically, what are the odds that there will be hundreds of students and faculty when it's the end of the semester? The day the state leg opens is the day I'll be there protesting for UH not now when I'm trying to figure out my finances, my courses, my future, my goals, my life! Hell no! It's not about unity; it's about reality. I'm all for a GOOD protest, but don't spout me some bullshit rhetoric about support.

Hey if you have anymore advice or suggestions then why don't you send them to:
Mark Ing
ASUH President

I'm sure he'll be happy to hear them. Have a great day!

I am sorry that we have indeed fallen silent. In that sense, Ing's communication was quite effective that student concerns might not always coincide with the faculty's. But the truth is, we have simply been doing our job and waiting to see what the administration would do next. I agree that we should prepare for the legislature's opening day and am quite willing to help plan over the Christmas break. Any takers?

Hi Everyone,

I agree wholeheartedly with Jon's suggestion that we meet over the break to organize our response to the legislature. Since very few people respond in the affirmative, let's assume that they are waiting for someone else to take the initiative and set up a date and time to meet. Let's do that.

I suggest we meet after grades are submitted: How about Monday, Dec. 21 at 1PM at UH?

In regards to the student rally at the legislature: while I don't agree with either the timing or the organizing tactic taken by the ASUH, it is important to support their initiative. Like the rally at the (non-sitting) legislature done by parents opposed to Furlough Fridays, we may not (and, I think, should not) support all of the ideas advanced by everyone involved. However, we can turn the political message around to one that clearly supports public, quality, affordable education in Hawaii.

Cheers,

I think the rally will bring a lot of students that aren't already involved in a group, but are concerned about UH finances.  I will ask the members of HUGE (Hawai'i Union of Graduate Educators)

to join me in collecting names for members and supporters, and distribute literature explaining why state law has to be changed to allow UH to recognize a student union.

Jon,
I agree that it would be good to plan something for the
legislature; however, I'm told that there won't ba an "opening day" in
the traditional sense this year, since the "grim economic times"
require action. They will be holding hearings, so maybe we need to
get to the education chairs to see if they will schedule something.
I'd need to do some checking to see if any of the folks I know are in
those positions (in fact, I'm not sure positions have been allocated
for the upcoming session). By the way, I used my interview with the
Star Bulletin to lament the impact of the budget cuts at UHM. Read
to the end...link below.

I too have dropped off the edge of the earth in recent weeks, mostly putting out academic fires.

I can attend a 10 a.m. gathering on Dec. 21.  This would be useful in that we will have, I hope, a better understanding of what we are facing from UH admin and the BoR, and the ability to look back at tomorrow's rally at the Capitol.

People,
Just caught up with all this; I'll be there.   Just tell me there.  Also, Ian reminded me, we are in the second year of a two year legislative cycle, so the Chairs from last year are the same as this coming year.   We need to get SOMEONE to hold a hearing.   That would be great.  We talked about this sometime back, so it was an idea we were tossing around.

Despite the lockdown of the campus on the 21st, I have secured the Halau ʻo Haumea, our open sided auditorium (no airconditioning) for the meeting on Monday at 10 am. It will be comfortable and easy and I hope that anyone and everyone feels welcome to attend.
