Hi all,

As was originally hoped back in 2012 when the DHN was setup, the apparent need for the DHN has decreased in the past couple years. I believe that it reflects a combination of formal organizations hiring more information management / digital capacity, newer digital/volunteer teams maturing & developing lasting partnerships, and newer (financially backed) groups emerging (e.g. H2H network).

In that regard, Stephanie Tran (copied) and I have taken the initiative to streamline the website using a static site generator. You can see the late draft here: https://static.digitalhumanitarians.com/. Once completed, it will replace the Drupal-based version that PeaceGeeks has kindly hosted for us over the years.

I have also removed the explicit aspect of activating the DHN. However, there is still a very clear way to contact the DHN - an email address that simply forwards to Patrick and myself for now.

If you have any questions for me, do not hesitate to get in touch.

FYI: the static site has been build using Publii and hosted for free on GitHub pages.

Cheers,
Andrej

Hi Cat,

We will look at bringing over the news & events content. However, we will want to add it in a way that it is clear it is “archived” content so that people do not go to the section of the site over time and wonder why it is stale / out-of-date.

Cheers,
Andrej

Thanks Andrej, you’ve been a great long-time supporter of the digital movement which took a lot of blood, sweat and tears from many.  I guess this is another chapter in the story.  The new website looks great.  I was wondering if it’s at all possible to migrate the “news & events” content?  Without it – the story is lost.

Thanks again for all the years of support and your passion to improve disaster response.

Hi Andrej,
I agree this is a good move and thanks for taking the time to do it. I think you are spot on with the three reasons you identified - these are all really positive things, and while the DHN doesn't continue in it's original form, in a sense it paved the way for even more sustainable forms of digital humanitarianism to develop. I hope all agree that this is a major success of the network! Best
Tyler

Hi Tyler,

Thanks for the feedback.

In regards to Cat's request of moving the News & Events, we have copied them to the following page: https://static.digitalhumanitarians.com/dhn/past-news-and-events/. Nothing super fancy, but it brings the content over.

If anyone else has any comments/feedback on the site, do let me know. In the coming days, I will look at moving the static site to the main domain (i.e. www) and create a new subdomain (such as archive.digitalhumanitarians.com) where we can let the current Drupal site live for a short while.

Cheers,
Andrej

Hi all,

Quick update that I have made the "cut-over" to the new static version of the site: https://www.digitalhumanitarians.com/

I also put up a short (personal) blog post - which is mostly a copy/paste from the current DHN front page: https://blog.veritythink.com/post/187843393634/scaling-back-the-digital-humanitarian-network

Cheers,
Andrej
