We are looking for a member organization to take lead on this exciting request!

Activator:  UN OCHA - World Humanitarian Summit
Timeframe:  8-10 consultation meetings in 2014 and culminating in May 2016 in Isntanbul
Request:  We will need support with infographics, graphic design, animation, social media, general outreach. We would also love to showcase your members' uses of technology and share best practices. The overall goal is to improve the entire global humanitarian response system.

The World Humanitarian Summit (WHS) was initiated by the UN Secretary General in 2013 to leverage new partnerships, technologies, and ways of working to improve global response to natural and man-made disasters.  There will be about 8-10 consultation meetings around the world as well as an online platform to solicit input beginning in 2014, and will culminate in May 2016 in Istanbul at the first-ever summit of this scale and scope. The WHS is being managed by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The objective of the Summit and the events leading to it is to set a future agenda and system that is more responsive to the changing humanitarian landscape of: greater needs, more diverse actors, new technologies, political and economic shifts. Four broad themes will be examined throughout the consultations: (1) humanitarian effectiveness; (2) reducing vulnerability and managing risk; (3) transformation through innovation; and (4) serving the needs of people in conflict. We will need support with infographics, graphic design, animation, social media, general outreach. We would also love to showcase your members' uses of technology and share best practices. The overall goal is to improve the entire global humanitarian response system.

Respond to this thread if you would like to be part of the solution team or if you wish to be leading the solution team.
Thanks!
Cat

Thanks everyone for the great response.  Sounds like we're all in agreement that this is an amazing opportunity.  The scope and length of this makes it more of a partnership (or special working group) than an activation.  Duration is 15 months not 15 days, so while some of the items they are requesting are simple, the duration and success is tied to clear and measurable goals and in a concerted effort within our membership.  I'll send them a response on Monday and set a call with them and with the members on next steps so that we can determine the best approach.  With such a long engagement, its nice having more than one group interested in leading portions of the engagement too!  Will get back to everyone in the middle of next week.

Have a great weekend!

Hey gang,

Very exciting news!  Though we can't take lead, we at DataKind are happy to support in whatever ways we can.  We're bandwidth-constrained, not interest-constrained :)

Let us know how we can be helpful and glad to see Humanity Road stepping up to take lead!

Best,
Jake

Hi All,

As suggested before I think forming a working group for this sort of thing makes sense. I can certainly ask for volunteers from the HOT community.

Thanks,

I would agree with Kate's suggestion.  It is hard to gauge exactly how much worked they will request.  And, letting volunteers from within our groups would be a great way to alleviate the work from entity managers and our own coordinators.

FYI @all:  I was not behind this request from OCHA  [although I am constantly advocating for DHNetwork engagement].   I think that with the significance being given to this event by OCHA & the UN Secretary General, being able to get involved is a huge opportunity for the DHNetwork.  Also, I will be pushing to have DHNetwork physically represented at the event.

Cheers,
Andrej

Project Update:  Below are the groups who have expressed interest in the project so far, but any active DHN member can join in going forward.  Humanity Road offered (and selected) to be lead for the project launch and has reached out to everyone who signed up on the form at the link provided earlier.  This is the first time Humanity Road will be leading a DHN activation so please join me in thanking them for stepping up to the plate.  The Standby Task Force has also offered to lead, and the length and size of this will require alot of help in that aspect so its greatly appreciated.  I responded to the UN request earlier in the week and met with them today.  Once the working group is set up - we can start to talk about what is needed and everyone will have input on what aspects they wish to take on, and even in the creation or leading of projects for the summit itself.

FYI Our DHN googlegroup consists of recipients that are key contacts from each of our organizations (not all project participants).  We wouldn't want to add all clients/customers to this googlegroup, so a working space is needed.    I've been in dialogues with Willow and Andrej on how to structure our working group and welcome all input but will start a new string for that.  First step is identifying everyone who should be included in the next planning calls - if you have not done so yet - please add yourself to this list https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1gsBEDYZT1YOduuV022V8z_zIKjT0L49Faibd4mPXPI4/viewform this email list is important to creating our working group.  There are going to be many aspects to this project over a 3 year period which will need members to lead.  Thanks to everyone for stepping up to the plate.

Hi all,
I have a question if you don't mind:   who makes the decision for the DHN in terms of who leads deployments?

Just curious how this process is working.

Thanks,

Hi Cat,

1. Same question as Melissa. I assume you meant HR *was* selected; am curious to know more about that process within the DHN.

2. Has a leadership structure already been defined? HR and SBTF are listed as co-leads, but your email describes HR as leading with help from SBTF.

3. Has the timeframe been modified? An earlier email referenced 15 months, but this says 3 years.

Appreciate your clarification on the above!

Cheers,

Alain

Good Morning -

Regarding "selection"

I have a meeting from 9am to 3pm so can catch up on responses later today.

The DHN Coordinators reviewed the request and discussed it in email.  I nominated HR to assist with project launch, since SBTF lead the last engagement.  Leadership structure isnt yet defined - this will be more of a working group than a single project and as we've said there are still lead and co-lead opportunities.  There will be requests for data products, mapping products, and other technology based requests.  The timeframe in the initial email mentioned work in 2014 and a summit in 2016.  It didnt mention what engagement would be needed in 2015, the call helped clarify that.

Hope that clarifies and I hope we still have your support for what will be a really wonderful engagement.
