Hi DHNers,

Sharing an inquiry that we received through the general inquiry form. The group - EarthCube - may have some interesting solutions for those working with or are somehow related to satellite imagery. Website also talks about change detection.

I know that others have and/or work in this space so I am not promoting this group. But, wanted to share their inquiry in case any of the DHN members were interested and wanted to reach out bi-laterally.

Cheers,

Andrej

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am a former humanitarian worker (most recently, I was working in Iraq on
the Mosul emergency response as Area Manager for different organizations) and
now an independent consultant.
I am currently working with EarthCube (earthcube.eu), a French start up
company that has developed solutions using machine learning and AI to extract
objects from VHR satellite imagery.
We have been making progress on adapting our solution to humanitarian crisis
- effectively allowing quick identification of areas of mass displacement,
though recurrent extraction and counting of new residential structures
(tents, shelters etc) and roads - particularly in hard - to -
reach/inaccessible areas. A case study will soon be available.

We would like to exchange with Digital Humanitarians to get a better sense of
field needs and current developments in the area.
I remain available for any questions, and hope that we can arrange a moment
to exchange.

Many thanks,

Best regards

Caroline Avan

Hi everyone,

While the organization in question appears to leverage AI and machine learning, the nature of their inquiry is has more to do with the field needs (i.e., “business” users) than with SWB’s pure capabilities, nor do we possess specific capabilities around image analysis for humanitarian response. We believe other organizations are better positioned to respond and, for that reason, we will not be responding to this particular inquiry.
