Dear all,

Tait Brimacombe, copied, reached out through the DHN website hoping to find (relevant) volunteers to complete a survey to help in her research. She is with the University of Adelaide Humanitarian Emergencies in a Digital World program. As part of her research, she is seeking to understand the motivations, experiences and perceptions of impact on the part of volunteers engaged in crisis mapping activities. I asked for a few details which she has kindly provided (below).

If you are willing to share with your volunteers/members, that would be greatly appreciated by Tait. The survey link is: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/S32HP8X

1) Concept: the overall aim of this project is to explore the role that information, communication and big data play in improving situational awareness during humanitarian emergencies. In particular this research aims to:

    • Examine how new technologies, particularly crisis mapping, are driving opportunities for enhanced data capture during emergencies
    • Examine the nature and scope of different crisis mapping platforms and processes.
    • Explore the motivations, rationale and experiences of volunteers who participate in these processes.
    • Interrogate the interaction between crisis mapping platforms and the organisations involved in emergency response.

2) Scope: This is a University of Adelaide interdisciplinary research project. There are a number of phases to this project including: (i) a desk based literature review, (ii) an online survey targeted at volunteers/participants in crisis mapping platforms, designed to examine the extent and nature of individual’s interment in these platforms, their experiences and motivations for participating and some perceptions of the impact, (iii) follow up interviews with survey participants (who have specifically indicated their desire to participate further at the end of the survey), and (iv) interviews with representatives from emergency response organisations in order to investigate the interaction between these response organisations and crisis mapping platforms. As you will see, this survey specifically pertains to stage 2 (in bold).

3) Benefits: This research has the potential to identify and promote the ways in which crisis mapping is being utilised by emergency response organisations, as well as identifying any areas of limitation and/or improvement. It is envisaged that this could improve emergence response communication practices. In terms of any specific benefit to DHN, we are happy to provide a research brief either outlining the overall findings of the research and/or addressing any specific areas that DHN may have a particular interest and/or investment in. As such, we are very keen to ensure this research, where possible, is of the utmost use to participating organisations and their members.

4) Expected outcomes: in addition to the above, the specific outputs of this research include 2 academic journal articles, a training package and toolkit of emergency risk communication materials, and any briefing documents relevant to participating organisations (as outlined above). In addition, we envisage this research project leading to a larger funding application for a longer-term project exploring some of the issues raised in this research in further detail and at a larger scale. There will be opportunities for any participating organisations to partner with the research team on this funding application should that be of any interest.

Kind regards,

Andrej

On the surface, this seems similar to a another recent request by another researcher. I wonder if there is a way to coordinate these types of request, or even, facilitate the coordination of these requestors. Professionally speaking, SWB is concerned with survey fatigue, which for one, impacts the quality of the response.

Probably not easily or without resources. When the DH Inc concept was being discussed, one idea was to have a role that facilitated & coordinated research requests. There seems to  be a never ending list of new universities, programs, and students interested in this space.

Obviously, you have the option to simply ignore the request or just have one (maybe rotating) SWB person complete them.
